Knowing that Peertube's RSS feeds can be picked up by post readers, I'm giving serious thought to quitting YouTube in favour of the Fedi. The last few weeks, YouTube has really made themselves out to be such a shit company and I think it's time to really think about what I make and where it goes online. Might even get back into writing.

I love the Fedi's thoughts on this though.

@ChrisWere I'm a fan of staying on youtube because it's a platform but using it to show people better places to be.

@stefan @ChrisWere Sadly, I think this is the right way. The audience is on YouTube but putting some exclusive content on #Fedi to entice viewers to switch over could be a good strategy.

@finallycanuck @stefan @ChrisWere I don't begrudge anyone, specifically creators, for not leaving youtube, as youtube is their employer. That's just not something you can walk away from.

@ChrisWere i've been trying to decrease my YouTube usage for a while now, using Peertube for creators whenever available, using paid ethical entertainment (Nebula & Dropout) as my main source of video content, supporting some creators on Patreon and watching their uploads there, etc.
i've still been using the YouTube app though, because even though i know direct support and stuff like Nebula pay a lot more per view, i know the ads do make a difference for the many creators i don't support.

@ChrisWere the recent news about them going anti-trans changed it for me for good. i've finally installed Newpipe (which as a bonus is a better Peertube client than the beta official app), and i've all but uninstalled the YouTube app (since Shorts do not seem to be a thing on Newpipe and i do specifically like the shorts the people i'm subbed to put out (edit: turns out they are but not in the subscription feed)), but i'm considering phasing that one out too.

@ChrisWere
i've been using YouTube's subscription feed more than the average user, and i've been moving more and more to non-algorithmic content for a while now, but after @TechConnectify 's video about algorithmic complacency i've been trying to all but eliminate my use of algorithmic recommendations and rely only on the sub feed. since Newpipe isn't connected to my account and as such doesn't have my recs, this recent changed has for me forced this experiment to it's logical conclusion.

@ChrisWere I'm gonna have to stay on YT as the vast majority of small to medium channels aren't on the fediverse, or will likely to ever migrate over!

My gut reaction is hell yeah! But would that be strategic as well as cathartic?

How about posting a short teaser video on YT for each full video you post on PeerTube? Just the intro of what the full video is about, with prominent links to the PT version for those who want to watch the whole thing.

This way you might still get some people discovering your videos/ PT via YT search algorithms.

@ChrisWere Go for it. I make a point of watching your stuff via Peertube and not the YouTube mirror. Except for the Super Secret Divinity 2 playthrough. Might as well use YouTube's free storage for that. What kind of BS has YouTube been up to that has gotten you thinking about this? I've always just viewed them and Google as a perpetual, vast wellspring of BS, so I'm not aware of any specific shenanigans that popped up.
