As Facebook continues to deteriorate I find myself having to revisit what my lifeboat options are for the #Gorkamorka
FB group I/we run. It's the most successful GoMo community there has ever been, which is wonderful, but the platform is awful.
I wonder if anyone on the #Fediverse has put thought into how best to move a #FacebookGroups community.
@Flamekebab Can anyone host an instance for the group? That would knock out some big barriers like choosing a server and it could be moderated to your community's preferences and needs.
"Sign up here" will always be easier than "Pick a server."
(This worked well for a community I'd like to be more a part of.)
Are you exploring different platforms within the fediverse? A few people doing that would help build momentum and investment in the move as well as figure out what works best for the group
@emmaaum an instance of what though? Therein lies the rub. I'm not sure whether a discussion platform that resembles FB Groups' functionality (but much improved and not designed with deliberate malice in mind).
@jupiter_rowland I'm after some form of discussion forum. The FB side of things is irrelevant to my needs (potentially actively harmful). I don't know precisely what that looks like as it doesn't need to be a traditional forum (I like 'em, but there's a few thousand other people who might feel differently).
@Flamekebab That's why I suggested a few of you working together to explore different fedi platforms to find out what will best suit your needs.
Start with Friendica. Try others.
Other services like Matrix too.
I'm still a fan of old school forums and discussion boards but it can be hard to wean people off of the current social media styles they're used to.
Have you asked under # TTRP or whatever hashtags or groups fit? There's probably someone doing something similar.
@emmaaum There's only me in the sense of getting this sort of thing done and so far I'm despairing at how many of these projects have an aversion to screenshots.
Friendica looks like a useful FB alternative, but it's the opposite of what I'd want for this community.
Currently Discourse is the front runner - I want something that has an app (mobile-first is the reality for many of our users ).
@Flamekebab i am interested in what you find. I'd like to push some tabletop communities Im a member of toward IMO better options on the fediverse. I'm the co-host of the Mantic Universe Podcast and want to have a community for it on the fediverse.
My impression is that mastodon is good enough to replace tabletop facebook groups. We just need to structure things around here (proper set of hashtags?), make idiot-proof how-to guides, and bring in people + post and interact here rather than there.
@Flamekebab my current understanding is that servers focused on one theme isnt necessary nor the optimal. Maintaining one takes effort! I'd rather pay some €€€ to a stable instance and focus on something else (content! Community!).
Just help people new to fedi to whichever server and through basics, then maintain specialized spaces. IMO content begets content, so I want to start posting my own tabletop stuff here rather than on facebook, and hope that over time there'll be a snowball effect.
@Flamekebab if you move it in here I'll gladly hop on, you know that
@petrescatraian initially just "where?", if anything exists that will fit what I think our needs are.
@petrescatraian Unfortunately the other projects page doesn't include screenshots for the discussion forum options. Given how important UI is for these things, getting a feel for the default experience is rather important!
On the plus side, Discourse looks like it might be a viable option if I theme it correctly.
@Flamekebab
Discord? I heard that USENET was starting up again, seriously.
@taoish I cannot abide Discord. I use it, but I loathe it. IRC at least wasn't tied to a single server provider
@Flamekebab
As is facebook, right?
@taoish Discord is a step down from what went before, in my eyes. Facebook didn't have a predecessor with regards to that kind of thing.
Regardless, I dislike Facebook too!
@Flamekebab I like Groups.io and moved several hobby-based groups there when Google shut down their option.
