Hannah Howe

Although Citizen Kane has topped many movie polls it was not popular on its release. Indeed, at the 1941 Oscars, Citizen Kane was booed every time one of its nine nominations was announced.

@HannahHowe it's one of the worst Oscar snubs ever. And when you see the movie that actually won, really makes you wonder..

@Dennis_Obi I suspect the boos made Orson Welles realise that he’d touched an establishment nerve. I can picture his smile…

@HannahHowe i think he did that. I did Rewatch it a few years ago, and it still blows my mind. That unique story telling and that camera work.

@Dennis_Obi Yes, the camerawork was extraordinary. Sometimes three shots in one scene, but the finished image comes across as one shot.

@HannahHowe wow, I didn't knew that. It must have been groundbreaking for the viewers back then.

@Dennis_Obi A classic of that kind is a bottle in the foreground, Orson Welles in a mid-shot and Jospeh Cotton in a long shot, all in focus because they were three shots edited together. That technique was used throughout the film, masterminded by Gregg Toland.

@HannahHowe and that's brilliant. Again it's one the of the worst Oscar snubs ever, but perhaps people/academy didn't realize it at the time they had a masterpiece in front of them. Of course, John Ford was a more solid name and perhaps hade som favorit among it's voters?

@Dennis_Obi These awards tend to be “political”. I don’t pay much attention to them.

@HannahHowe i have a soft sport for Academy awards and all ways have. But sure, they have done some remarkable odd choices especially when it comes to best picture. Some of the winning movie, never heard of them and it turned out to be a positive surprised...
