“We shall fight them on the beaches…” Not Winston Churchill, but a reference to Whit Monday 1964 when Mods and Rockers clashed on Brighton beach. The two tribes set about each other with belts, chains, burning deckchairs and stones. This was the latest in a long line of Mods v Rockers “fixtures” - Clacton, Hastings, Margate, Bournemouth…

Descendants from Teddy Boys, Rockers wore black jeans and leather jackets, and slicked back their hair. On their Triumph 500 motorbikes their aim was to hit 100mph on Britain’s (mostly tranquil) roads. When not on the roads, you’d find Rockers in transport cafes listening to rock and roll on the jukebox.

The Mods prided themselves in their fashion - mohair suits, Ben Sherman button-down shirts, and parkas. When not riding their Lambrettas or Vespas, they’d be listening to the Yardbirds, the Kinks and the Small Faces.

And if that wasn’t enough to drive our ancestors to distraction, the Hippies then arrived on the scene…
