Just got back from a fascinating Waterstones talk by Gaz Oakley, a chef who abandoned city life to obsessively grow vegetables and herbs on a plot near Abergavenny. He's a really inspirational speaker and it was a perfect #SolarpunkSunday event!
I am now keen to add Lemon Balm and Yarrow plants to my herb garden, and find space for a bucket of oyster mushrooms in the kitchen
Plus, I want to learn about #fermentation as a preservation method in case we ever get a glut of anything from our little garden
Any tips, Fedi friends?
@Steffi ooh awesome! I follow him on YouTube and really enjoy a lot of his content.
@alexisbushnell That's great! I admit I hadn't heard of him before seeing flyers for his talk appearing in a couple of vegan spots around Swansea I'm certainly a fan now though!!
@Steffi be warned, lemon balm might TAKE OVER
@inherentlee Lol, yes, Gaz mentioned it grows enthusiastically!!
Fortunately everything in our garden has to be in a pot or a planter so I'm fairly sure I can keep it one place
@Steffi sounds like you're ready! it has taken over our front garden
@inherentlee Oh no!! I mean it smells gorgeous, but a whole garden's worth would be dizzying
Whereabouts are you though? I guess you could spare a cutting?!
@Steffi Def not in wales! I am in Washington USA, upper left corner
@Steffi And yes, sometimes some gets hit by the lawnmower or we get to weeding, and it smells like a candy store
@inherentlee Your candy store comment reminds me, another herb being passed around for us all to sniff at was Cola plant which smelled just like the fizzy cola bottle sweets I loved as a kid. It had weird looking frondy kinda leaves.
@Steffi whoa, i never thought about the fact that is a plant...
@inherentlee Exactly! I don't think I'd ever thought to question before what Cola was actually made FROM.
Now, in theory anyway, I could grow my own sweets!
@inherentlee That would be a bit far to travel
@Steffi shame, I would love to share!!
