The bear pit at Sheffield Botanic Gardens was built in 1836 to house Bruin, a black bear kept there to 'entertain' visitors.
The pit later became 'Yorkshire's largest compost pit'.
The bear statue, beloved of Sheffield children for the last twenty years, is made of steel and is 2.4 metres tall.
Photos taken in yesterday's beautiful spring sunshine.

@elbowcrooker I miss the old Aviary and the two parrots, think they were called George and Poppet. There was also a Mynah bird that used to say "Morning George". Memories.

Might have a walk up there tomorrow. 👍

There was also that room with the fish tanks; must have cost too much to keep it going.
The pond now has three large koi carp but it's not the same.....

@elbowcrooker There were frogs and tadpoles in that pond I recall. Will have to check out the Koi.

I'm in Sheffield since 2018 and I've been to the Botanical Gardens many times but I didn't know about this. Tomorrow I will check it out

@wildeng
It's easy to miss if you don't know it is there. From the gate near the top of Brocco Bank you take the path down the slope, keeping the backs of the houses on Botanical road to your right. Take the first major path on your left then turn left again.
Enjoy your day!
