(2/3) So... Get a similar station, or do I invest in something better?

I decided to upgrade to a Davis Vantage Vue station with USB data logger/interface. They seem to have a great reputation. It won't measure anything the old station didn't, but the outdoor unit is a single part, which is neater, and can charge up using it's solar panel.

It's also fully compatible with the WeeWX software that I had been using with my old station!

(3/3) Set up was a breeze. I quickly had the outdoor unit assembled and mounted in the garden.
It's just one unit so there are no messy cables.

The console's great and shows lots of info with the push of a few buttons.

Then it was time to re-familiarise myself with WeeWX. It's running well and reporting into CWOP, PWS, WOW, AWEKAS and Weather Underground. It's also got its own site wx.ja91.uk/

I'm really happy with it so far!

If anyone has any questions about this, feel free to ask.

Now I need to learn some more advanced meteorological terms yn Gymraeg and perhaps at some point try localising WeeWX into Welsh 🤔

I used to have this set to tweet to @saltneyweather on birdsite every hour or so but I've lost access to the account and I don't think API access is great on there now.

I wonder if it's worth approaching our admin here on toot.wales about it 🤔

@ja
I have been on the same journey, started with Maplin and Oregon, but after many failures now have Davis #VantageVue. See profile for link to station. I post to all the sites you do. I started with FreeWX from Andy Keir but now use Cumulus which is open source and runs on Raspberry Pi.

@neutronwrangler that's interesting. Never heard of FreeWX but i used to run Cumulus on Windows when I first got the Maplin station. A local friend had their Maplin station set up with it. I suppose he's to blame for my interest in the hobby 🤣

I tried to take a look at your site but I got a certificate warning and the default Apache2 page.

@ja
Ah, yes. Sorry about that. In the middle of sorting out a certificate, sort of slipped to the back burner.

Try http not https

@neutronwrangler ah yes that's working now. I remember seeing that page for the first time. A definite sense of achievement

@wessexweather it's great. I would say that though, as I've been using it for years.

It's different to some weather station software in that there's no GUI. It's meant for headless use to report to other services and generate web pages to look at on other devices.

I used to run it on an original raspberry pi years ago and that worked great for a surprisingly long time.

These days it's running as a VM on my proxmox cluster with seperate web server and database containers. It's very flexible

@ja I currently use Meteobridge to collect my data and feed it to my website template and other services. I’m considering a Raspberry Pi solution myself, or a VM running on my Synology nas.
