It's open source, encrypted, and more importantly perhaps, not associated with #Meta in any way.
@lexicaleigh And, ironically, recommended by none other than elmo. Presumably when he was having a hissy fit with zuckerberg. Doesn't stop me preferring it to WhatsApp though.
@lexicaleigh Signal don't have a screen sharing feature on mobile.
I really miss this feature on the app, which makes it very hard for me to get other people, with whom I use it a lot, to adopt it.
@aezaerth That's fair.
It might be an unsolicited advice (sorry, in such case), but jitsi usually does a pretty good job if you need to share screen on mobile.
@lexicaleigh I can only recommend Signal with 100%. With all necessary features but, as you said, without Meta.
@lexicaleigh I'd just add that #Signal as great and private as it is, still is based in the USA and it's centralised service. So may be vulnerable towards governmental pressures. I'm experimenting with #simpleX - decentralised communicator that works pretty well. If you want to try it, just drop me a line (you can find a link in my profile).

Very promising indeed. I still use #xmpp beside Signal as well. Account is easily setup, no Phone number or Mail needed. End to end encrypted. Decentralised.
@lpryszcz@genomic.social Security is always a risk-reward tradeoff. IMO, Signal is in an acceptable spot between usability and security for most folks. Sure, there are better solutions, but any progress is good (enough)
@lexicaleigh@toot.wales
@lexicaleigh is there anything that isn't American?
@robriley I'm afraid I don't know, all I know is that I trust it more than I trust meta with both my data, and to behave responsibly.
@lexicaleigh
There's @matrix, it's a bit more like slack.
@robriley
@lexicaleigh @robriley
@threemaapp is from Switzerland and even a little bit more secure/privacy focused than signal (see picture). I think you can even still send them a banknote by mail, and they’ll send you a code in return. If you want to buy it without leaving a digital trace. I use Threema instead of Signal.
@gumbario @robriley @threemaapp Thank you!
@robriley @lexicaleigh yes, there is Threema from a Swiss company. It's very similar but doesn't require a telephone number. Instead you have a Threema ID which you can backup in case your phone dies.
WhatsApp, Threema and Signal are all closed services. Meaning it's a single organisation you have to use.
There are also Email (Delta chat), XMPP and Matrix as open protocols. There you can choose a provider and can talk with people of other providers, too, similar to the fediverse.
@robriley @lexicaleigh it really depends on your threat model.
Personally, Signal meets my needs and there's a case to make for mass migration to a single app to break current network effects.
But if US incorporation and hosting makes you uneasy, you could look at Threema.
It has similar cryptographic properties, can be used anonymously (no mobile number required), and has a level of usability expected from a messenger app.
Matrix is a little more on the complicated side in my opinion. Ultimately something decentralized/federated would be the best way to go...but for now I'd recommend Signal or Threema to my "non-technical" friends and relatives
@lexicaleigh I switched ages ago, but most people didn't (that I know) the convenience and familiarity of What's app keep most people fixed.
@lexicaleigh And Zuck didn't pay $19B for WhatsApp to protect our privacy.
