a stinky ox 🐂

I don't remember much about Second Life apart from when I tried it I managed to get a coffee cup stuck in my head. And that shortly after I first went in I came across a machine where you could buy yourself a horse penis.

I remember going into houses where people would tell you to fuck off because it was "private property" or something, which seemed a bit daft. And for a while companies were building stuff in there thinking it would be like the metaverse haha

I'm just surprised to find it's still going as I'd've thought all that kind of stuff would've moved over to VRchat by now.

@llamasoft_ox i can't tell what's more impressive, the companies being suckered into going virtual in second life, or the repeat offenders who fell another time for the metaverse

@mavica_again @llamasoft_ox and yet it's still there. The big companies are gone, but the virtual world lives on.

@AngharadHafod @llamasoft_ox i remember visiting the defunct IBM sim in SL a couple of years ago and it was a wonderful ghost town. in a corner somewhere i found a few pieces of clothing packaging, meaning someone with edit rights to that land went there to unpack something for their avatar, likely some time after it went abandoned. wonderful environmental storytelling

@llamasoft_ox I worked on second life for 2 years. The stories I could tell you…

@llamasoft_ox I vaguely remember somebody giving me a "job" on there, which I absolutely didn't understand the mechanics of at all. I was meant to be furnishing rooms or making furniture or something, but it'd been like an hour since I installed and the guy didn't explain anything about what I actually needed to do. Money kept appearing in my account though. 🤷‍♂️

Wonder how much it's accrued now 😏

@dev_ric oh I never got as far as being employed, I just walked/flew around for a bit looking at things and wondering why people were upset when I wandered into their perfectly accessible video game houses. Maybe if you had mates who met up in there and used it as a genuine social space it might be fun but as a casual onlooker it seemed kinda pointless and I never went in it again.

@llamasoft_ox I liked the idea of it but never got into it. I'd have preferred it to be more realistic I think... being able to just zap around made it too blatantly just a glorified chat room, and I wanted it to have more of a purpose as a game.

I've tried a few similar set-ups and none have really hooked me in. There was a cool isometric one I've now forgotten the name of, where you designed your own apartment and car, and could wander the streets and buy up billboards, but then just boredom.

@dev_ric I'm not a huge online gamer, I'm not especially competitive so I'm not really into all those shoot-one-another games and sometimes just think a nice chill social-space kind of thing would be nice, but I have found nothing that works unless you already have mates agreeing to meet up in there. Going in cold tends to lead to at best being ignored and at worst hassled by kids who shouldn't even be in there.

@dev_ric Walkabout Mini Golf with pals is about the best I've found yet in terms of just being a chill place where you can hang out, talk bollocks, and play a silly but fun game together.

@llamasoft_ox @dev_ric What we need is a VRChat pub .. pity that good avatars cost an arm and a leg I suppose ..

@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox that's why I liked Runescape. The original - it's a whole different game now that's competing with WoW and such.

Originally, it was just a very simple open world where you had "skills" like mining, smelting, crafting, etc, and each skill had its own leader board + worked like an idle clicker, but other than that it was essentially just a chat room. Your chat area was filtered to whoever you were standing near, plus DMs from friends.

And that's what I'm slowly making 😊

@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox I met people in Runescape over 20 years ago, who I'm still friends with today. Tonnes of people did - there's a whole documentary about it, with people who literally got married and had kids together after finding each other on this silly game.

@llamasoft_ox The UI was always so bad, amazed anyone stuck with it at all

@llamasoft_ox Most of the VR chat systems ban things like horses penises, so SL's niche still exists.

@llamasoft_ox Also, people who can't or won't buy a VR headset.

@llamasoft_ox Oh! My absolute favourite moment from SL was when Reggie Fils-Aime gave a presentation in it and went AFK for a while and while he was away someone put a great big pair of tits on his avatar.

@guffo ahah that's awesome :D

I seem to remember some griefing shenanigans involving flying penises I saw on YT back in the day. Not gonna lie I had a good laugh at some of those griefing vids because they were just so ridiculous :D
