I have a home #apple #orchard of 6 trees, and it has been our custom to have a wassailing celebration for the trees on 12th night to thank the trees for the harvest and to encourage a new crop in the spring. We simply stand by the oldest tree and sing "Here We Come A Wassailing" and share a bottle of hard cider amongst us and the trees. I know this pales in comparison with many fine old traditions and I would LOVE to hear about how you #wassail your trees!

@richrollgardener I never knew what wassailing was. What a great tradition!
@richrollgardener What a lovely tradition.
@richrollgardener I can see it in my mind's eye…it makes me happy.
@richrollgardener we wassail our trees but place toast with cider on it in the tree first, then sprinkle the tree roots with cider, then drink the rest having sung. We also beat saucepans with spoons to drive away the bad
@JeniParsons
We do that too!
@richrollgardener I planned a community orchard though my work. We're holding our second annual wassail on 20th Jan. It's quite a long ceremony:
The Green Man leads a musical procession from the park gate to the orchard.
In the orchard we all shout and bang pans to shoo away evil spirits and wake the trees.
We raise a special cup for a toast to the trees.
Children from the crowd hang toast in the branches for the robin.
Finally, it's time for hot squash and campfire toast. :)
@smbsy Excellent!
@richrollgardener There's a wassail at my local community orchard tomorrow that I'll be popping along to.
@beecycling I'll be there in spirit! Doing my own little Wassail tomorrow also.
@richrollgardener this afternoon in a park in Kent, UK, in our community orchard, singing, dancing, mulled cider and cakes ( daytime for safety of procession)
@richrollgardener I live in the US and my partner has a bunch of trees and I shared these posts with him. I thought Wassail (the holiday carol) was basically a drinking song. No idea this was a THING! We'll need to do it next year.
