I'd like to travel from Cardiff to Istanbul (2 adults and 2 children) in July without flying. I'm thinking or . I can't quite figure out the use of euro rail cards and if it's suitable or not.

I guess you mean ? I've done a bit of that, including Cardiff to Athens via the Black Sea and Sofia.
If the children are 11 or younger, then they get free IR pass when an adult buys. 12+ they need a youth pass. Yes Turkey and all likely countries en route are covered.
Evergreen advice is to look up @seatsixtyone - seat61.com/Turkey.htm

As Ian has said the Seat61 site is the absolute best place to work out railway journeys just about anywhere in Europe & beyond.
He keeps the site updated regularly.

It's on his site but Eurail is for non-European residents and Interrail is for European (including UK) residents. It's a common misunderstanding.

There's lots more advice on Mastodon if you use the #interrail hashtag.

@robriley
No worries. Glad to have been of help. I've done to every EU nation except Cyprus, so I can take a stab at getting to most European destinations.
Feel free to post whatever you might be wondering about .
