Sheepnik

The starlings were throwing some good shapes this evening.

Excuse the wonkiness

@sheepnik They’re both mesmerising and mysterious.

@sheepnik You're right, definite touch of the toy giraffe about that first one.

@scribblans A giraffe was what I had in mind too!

@sheepnik

Ah! I thought it look familiar 🙂

Was this recently?

Amazing and something I need to see for myself.

@simonzerafa It was just earlier today. You can see some variation on this most evenings from late October - mid March, though from my experience you get the best "show" later in December to about now.

@sheepnik

That's what I was wondering. I often don't get past Aberaeron. The fish and chips draw me in every time 😉

@sheepnik Beautiful setting and dynamic shapes! Lovely!!!

@sheepnik driving home on the bus, I spotted for the first time a large flock settling over the ynys hir reserve.

@_bydbach_ Oh, that must have been stunning.

@sheepnik do they roost at the pier all year round, albeit in smaller numbers?

@helenclayton I'm not entirely sure, but I think not.

@helenclayton I suspect most have smaller roosting sites wherever they spend their days. I've read somewhere that starlings will fly up to 20 miles to get to their winter roosting sites, so that's a pretty big area to cover. Others may go elsewhere in Britain, or even migrate to Europe.

@sheepnik It’s incredible that they all come together, presumably returning to the same place each year, and falling into the choreography. Beautiful. Still yet to see a murmuration like that myself. I guess they’ll scatter to the four winds again soon?

@helenclayton Yes, it's amazing that they do manage to find their way to the same place every year. I don't know how long they've been coming here, but it's at least 20 years, and probably much longer than that.

Most will be gone by the end of next month, if not sooner if it stays warm, and then it'll be the long wait 'til October for me to see them again.

@sheepnik something to look forward to in the winter months ☺️

@sheepnik I was just learning about murmurations! These must have been super cool to see in person! :bunhdheart:

@sheepnik thought this was boids but it's actual birbs, neat

@sheepnik ok, the first one is a giraffe, and the the third is definitely an emu. The fourth is two wales. It sure what they painted in the second one.

@sheepnik oh my - just come across this - how wonderful.
