My second read-through of The Fifth Season is even better than the first because I'm not rushing through impatient to find out what happens next, plus I'm actually catching some major foreshadowing this second time around. I'm still surprised by some things, though, because I either forgot them since my first read or was in too much of a hurry the first time.

I have many Thoughts and Feelings about a lot of big heavy stuff, but how about if I get light-hearted for now and explain my bonkers yet amusing theory that the character Lerna has the instincts of a Breeder which explains his feelings for [mild, likely obvious spoiler redacted]? #amReading #BrokenEarth

Might be running a #burningwheel game soon, and I'm thinking of shamelessly ripping off Arx Fatalis and NK Jemisin's #brokenearth novels. My quandary is which of these is most exciting:

1) The immediate aftermath of the cataclysm as a group moves into a vault/shelter

2) The internal dynamics of a community while the cataclysm still rages outside, no end in sight

3) The fate of a group as the calamity begins to subside and leaving the "vault" becomes viable

First sentences of the three books in The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin:

1 - The Broken Earth - "Let's start with the end of the world, why don't we? Get it over with and move on to more important things."

2 - The Obelisk Gate - "Hmm. No. I'm telling this wrong."

3 - The Stone Sky - "Time grows short, my love. Let's end with the beginning of the world, shall we? Yes. We shall."

@reginasbread You might like N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy (The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, The Stone Sky). I should warn that there are also younger heroes, but if you want a story about a middle-aged woman who has seen some shit and is tired, so very very tired, of trying to save the world for people who hate her...

(also, Jemisin's prose is on par with Dylan Thomas, would be the other reason to read it)
