Today I took a long walk out to Loch an Eilein and its little castle on an island. 22.7k steps, so my feet are pretty sore, but worth it. Walk was nice, through pine forests and some beaver ponds which provided habitat for a decent variety of bird life, and the castle at the end of the journey was so worth it. Ate both of my Emergency Snickers lakeside and drained both of my water bottles. Sweaty day, but a good one.

Sooneck Castle on the Middle Rhine (Mainz-Bingen district, Rhineland-Palatinate) was first mentioned in 1271. Over the centuries, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1834, the then Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV and his brothers bought the completely dilapidated Sooneck Castle and had it rebuilt as a hunting lodge between 1843 and 1861.

Kriegshoven moated castle near Swisttal-Heimerzheim (Rhein-Sieg district). The date of its first construction is not known; the lords of Kriegshoven are first mentioned in the 13th century. The current Renaissance building dates from the 16th century and is still inhabited by a noble family.

Chateau de Chambord The Chamboard Castle Spires

We awoke to a day of promising adventures ahead of us. Our first full day here in the Loire Valley began with plans to visit the Château de Chambord. This Château turned out to be about an hour’s drive away from our hotel.
