Despite having my opinion towards Christendom and rather following the Nordic beliefs, I always admired the ways especially cathedrals were built in the well-known gothic style.

It's amazing what people were able to create in the Middle Ages just for God's sake and if you've ever read Ken Follett's "The Pillars of the Earth" you will know what I am talking about - this archway of Canterbury Cathedral's inner courtyard is a piece of architectural excellence in terms of a gothic building!

Reminder that there's a book out there in which giant cathedrals on tracks incessantly crawl around the equator of a frozen planet to keep an uninterrupted view of a sacred stellar object.

That would be Alastair Reynolds' Absolution Gap (part of the Revelation Space series).

Here an attempted illustration from a French translation of the book.

Re/peal

Arches and vaults
of creamy white stone
without any faults
or imperfect tones

form a cloister’s arcade,
pale flagstones that pave
the path to a gate
that leads to a nave.

Would this aisle lead away
from my own silent hells
and repeal my dismay,
a resonant bell?

A distant, faint chime
touches my inner ear
and quietly rhymes
with the fading of fear.
