We see net zero emissions pledges everywhere, but only 14 per cent of Australians actually understand what net zero means. Who could blame them? Since the Paris Agreement in 2015, the term “net zero” has been misused and misconstrued. This is largely because it was co-opted by the fossil fuel industry, which has exploited the “net” in net zero as a loophole to rely on carbon offsets rather than make genuine emissions reductions

Another climate-related record falls.

This time, it's one of the worst apple-growing seasons in the Baltic countries, due to unseasonably wet conditions.

Remind me again what Nordhaus said about the climate and economic costs?

For the first time, global average concentrations of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas emitted as a byproduct of burning fossil fuels, exceeded 430 parts per million (ppm) in May. The new readings were a record high and represented an increase of more than 3 ppm over last year.

The measurements indicate that countries are not doing enough to limit greenhouse gas emissions & reverse the steady buildup of C02

The Roundtable has dismissed calls to cut back production, arguing that ranching techniques designed to encourage carbon sequestration in soils and grasslands, as well as technological innovations such as methane-reducing feed additives, will be adequate to curb emissions from livestock.

Scientists, however, see scant evidence that such approaches can make a meaningful contribution to tackling the climate crisis

Chevron’s Gorgon facility in WA, one of the highest emitting gas facilities in the world, ended up with an emissions limit that was far, far higher than its 2023-24 emissions – the weakest target the project has ever received

Because it was under its limit, it was issued 388,803 ‘safeguard mechanism credits’, which another polluter can buy from Chevron to meet its emissions target
