When my clothes become too tired to be worn when going out, some of them are assigned to gardening duties.
The T-shirt in this photograph, frayed and with holes, must be around 15 years old. Not as old as I thought, in fact. A (now gardening) fleece is still in much better condition than this T-shirt and must be nearly 30 years old. Clothes do keep a long time.
I suspect that I would not feature in an industrialist's wet dream.

Potted up the hollyhocks. Should have done it a bit sooner I think, lots of roots. I always think I have killed half of them, peat free compost is inclined to be coarse, but time will tell. These are Creme d'Cassis so deep maroon. #gardening

Now reading:

One Garden Agains the World by Kate Bradbury.

A Month in the Country by Bob Carr, Danish translation by Jens Pedersen.

Jeg bor i en hemmelig drøm, Inger Christensen’s early poems.

Kate Bradbury’s book is a finalist in the UK Garden Media Guild Awards, nominated for the Beth Chatto Environment Awards.

I tend to read in English it feels a bit odd to be reading a Danish translation of A Month in the Country. The book has been in my wish list for some years I found this recent translation, as well as the book of poetry at Cafe Ordgjest in Aarhus. Stepping out of my comfort zone but it will probably improve my spoken Danish.

The collection of poems includes a heart shaped book, which spoke to me. I used to make a lot of books and zines and art mail.

Potted on a bunch of squash, courgette, and fat baby achocha seedlings this morning. Laundry is hanging on the line. Bread ingredients in the machine. Full moon tarot is done.

Still a lot of struggle in my cards, damn you reversed Wands, but The World showed up as well so hopefully it’s either coming to an end or I will become better able to cope with it.

@QueerSatanic yep, during the Vietnam era, a lot of idealistic folks thought they’d build fences, raise livestock, grow all their food… and failed. It’s better to keep your job and sign up for Master Gardener classes or ask a friendly neighbor for advice. Learn other skills, too, like sewing and carpentry, and start taking more responsibility for preparing your meals from scratch. Then if you still want to move, you’ll be more prepared. #gardening #prepping

Got frost?

Since it might freeze tonight I put the lids on the plastic jars that are protecting these lettuce transplants. The jars help protect the small plants from being battered by the wind and I like to think they might help keep slugs off. The jars originally had mixed nuts and I cut the bottoms off.

Also in the pic are Walla Walla onions that were started from seed last fall and overwintered in the greenhouse before being transplanted into this raised bed.

Ordered our vermiculite and peat moss to be delivered next week, so we can make the "Mel's mix" for the raised beds once the weather cooperates. Maybe two weeks or so out. Let the soil sit in the sun in the beds and ready itself for seeds and transplanted tomatoes.

I hope I can plant in early May.
