The trouble arose from… a defect in one of the small street transformers… [but] no one, apparently, thought of advising the electric lighting station.…<br> The greatest amount of inconvenience was perhaps experienced at James Smith’s drapery establishment,… a store packed with customers in pitch darkness.… As this is the second time the firm have had such an experience… they are putting in a stand-by lighting service…<br> It was not until a personal call was made at the lighting station that the officers realised the extent of the trouble… the lights were not restored till about half-past 9.…<br> Electric lighting is wonderfully convenient—until something goes wrong. It was so popular that it became a best-seller. A few choice excerpts:<br>If you cannot swallow a piece of food, turn ’round discreetly and throw it somewhere.<br>Retain wind by compressing your belly. Do not be afraid of vomiting if you must; for it is not vomiting but holding the vomit in your throat that is foul.<br>Turn away when spitting lest your saliva fall on someone.</p>

To fidget is a bad habit; it gets on the nerves.
