Water temp of 17 today vs air temp of 13-16, but it was windy and the water was as choppy as I've seen it.
Despite swimming through the last two winters, lizard brain still looked at the dark, dark water, felt the wind, and went "welp!"
Waiting for the #OpenWaterSwimming season to start. Grab your suit, it's time to hit the chuck!
Water temp is now above fifteen so the triathletes are all back. I love seeing the venue filled with a flotilla of tow floats.
I managed 750m, so starting to get exercise rather than just cold water immersion.
I really liked this piece by @petecarr
So many swimmers rave about the dopamine hit of cold water exposure. I don't get that. Mostly I just feel cold.
Nevertheless there's something very powerful in overcoming the lizard brain's very well-founded response to being in cold-water. I feel the fear and do it anyway (subject to rational safety assessment.) In a world where my brain is constantly rattling, facing that primal fear is very powerful.

I really wasn't in the mood for swimming today but I went anyway, and the sun was shining and there were new swimmers to welcome, so batteries recharged slightly. Not actually warmer than last week though, despite a full week of sunshine. Cold nights are still dragging temperatures down.
As the days lengthen and water temperatures rise, the first triathletes appear, flexing their wetsuits tentatively and cautiously ducking their heads under the water. Some are old hands, joyously returning to their spring rituals, but some are hesitantly approaching the water for the first time.
As of today I have now swum through the whole winter, and racked up over 15 sub 10 swims.
The joy of the open water swimmer when it gets above 8 degrees and the sun is shining. #ColdWaterSwimming #OpenWaterSwimming
Slight missing image on my recent #ColdWaterDipping article. I've fixed it now and hopefully the piece makes sense.

A bit of Qi Gong to connect with the world and the birds before getting in the river for a dip. Water temp about 3c. Air temp about 2c. Wind was fresh.
Absolutely loved the last 4 days of dips. It’s the best time of year for swimming. #OpenWaterSwimming #Photography
If I said cold water dipping was like BDSM, would you be more interested in trying it? What if DryRobe sold nipple clamps? #ColdWaterSwimming #WildSwimming #BDSM #OpenWaterSwimming

Very clever winter beach activity by Rachel Andrews. Collecting black rocks in contractor bucket and then creating stone fishes using those black rocks.
