A #mining company has been #fined close to $221,000 for almost 30 instances of discharging waste into the #environment without authorization in southeastern #BritishColumbia.

On Aug. 8, the #BCMinistryOfEnvironment handed #TeckCoal Ltd. — now operating as #ElkValleyResources — two administrative #penalties based on #WasteDisposal issues over two years at its Elkview operations near #SparwoodBC.

This is not the first time the Elkview #coal mining operations have been penalized for #unauthorized waste disposals. Two years ago, Teck Coal received a penalty of close to $200,000 for several discharges in 2020.

Teck Coal has faced tens of millions of dollars in fines for #contaminating #waterways in B.C. over the years.

It is also now dealing with allegations of dumping harmful substances into waters frequented by fish in the province's southeastern region. #EnvironmentCanada laid five charges against the company in July, and they have not been tested in court.

A court hearing in that matter is scheduled for Oct. 10.

Trump reveals he made $300,000 selling Bibles and has big cryptocurrency stash

Financial disclosure shows presidential nominee owes $500m in #civil #penalties but sheds little light on #solvency

Donald Trump made hundred of thousands from his branded #Bible and millions from his #properties
– but also owes millions for #defamation and #fraud cases, according to his latest financial disclosures that shed little light on the perennial question of whether the Republican presidential nominee is, in fact, solvent.

Voluminous disclosure documents to the US Office of Government Ethics to comply with election campaign laws show that,
in addition to Trump’s US real estate holdings,
he has global financial interests, including registered #trademarks in China, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ukraine and Israel.

He also owns millions in #cryptocurrency and has a six-figure investment in #gold #bars.

But the disclosures also hint at Trump’s substantial personal outgoings,
👉including more than $500m owed to both the writer E Jean Carroll and the New York attorney general -- resulting from civil judgments involving defamation and accounting fraud.👈

Both judgments
– $83m to Carroll and
– $454m to New York state
– are subject to bonds while Trump appeals the decisions,
a process that could take years.

Trump’s #MarALago home and private club in Florida, which formed part of a case against the Trump Organization involving #inflated asset #valuations,
produced about $57m in income from the club, down about $8m from a previous disclosure.

The disclosures are not a profit-and-loss balance sheet
– they only give broad ranges of income and assets
– so alone they cannot determine whether Trump is in the red or the black.

He has consistently resisted efforts to force the release of his tax returns,
although two years ago a Democrat-controlled Congress released six years of Trump’s tax returns,
dating to 2015, the year he announced his presidential bid.

The Federal Trade Commission today announced a final rule that will ⭐️combat #fake #reviews and testimonials⭐️ by prohibiting their sale or purchase
and allow the agency to seek #civil #penalties against knowing violators.

“Fake reviews not only waste people’s time and money, but also pollute the marketplace and divert business away from honest competitors,” said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan.

“By strengthening the FTC’s toolkit to fight #deceptive #advertising, the final rule will ⭐️ protect Americans from getting cheated,
put businesses that unlawfully game the system on notice,
and promote markets that are fair, honest, and competitive.”

The FTC held an informal hearing on the proposed rule in February 2024.

In response to public comments, the Commission made numerous clarifications and adjustments to its previous proposal.

To keep things in perspective, Exxon are 4th or 5th on the list. Depends on which years you do the accounting for.

Cumulative emissions from major fossil fuel companies worldwide 1965-2020
Published by Ian Tiseo, Feb 20, 2024

The Saudi Arabian petroleum and national gas company, Saudi Aramco, emitted roughly 65 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂) between 1965 and 2020. The top twenty polluters were responsible for almost 520 GtCO₂ during this period, representing roughly 35 percent of global fossil fuel and cement emissions.

#recklessendangerment will have much clearer association and valid proof than attempting to #prosecute for #murder or #homicide.

The #penalties may be less, but so is #onusofproof or #burdenofproof.

activists sentenced
steep price paid for gift to us
thank them by hearing

@markhburton

People can indeed argue the sentences of years in jail for UK climate protests are too harsh, or can argue that the trials were improper because relevant evidence was excluded, but such discussion misses a valuable opportunity:

Another way to parse this situation and do honor to these peopie is to note that they have knowingly risked a lot and so will pay a lot for us to hear their message. Our job is to treat this expensive gift with the due honor for the price paid, not to whine that it could likely have been obtained at discount, because that cheapens the message.

Climate Change, now for lack of timely action a Climate Emergency, threatens billions every person now alive, and all our would-be progeny. Without meaning to seem callous to people making heroic efforts to wake us up, if it costs whole fractions of their lives to tell us a message so important, that cost--in societal terms--is ALREADY cheap.

By all (moral) rights, a "necessity" defense should apply here, though the paradox then becomes again that if the defense is too surely available, no risk has been taken and so the shock value of someone being willing to deliver the message this way is diminished.

highlights the larger systemic issue of #AnimalCruelty and concludes #Montana 's policies make the state vulnerable to similar tragedies.

Ewelt argues that this incident could have easily taken place in #Montana, where savage and brutal practices are allowed with minimal #penalties. Where Roberts was fined only $250 for his crime in Wyoming, the same crime committed in Montana would have resulted in an even smaller #fine.
