Hundreds of former and current staffers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and private citizens are rallying outside the agency's headquarters to show respect for director Susan Monarez and several members of staff who resigned in protest at her ousting. The White House has appointed Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s deputy, Jim O'Neill, as the new acting CDC director. Monarez's lawyers told NBC News that she has not been lawfully fired, since the only person with authority to do that is President Trump. In an interview today, Dr. Debra Houry, the CDC's chief medical officer and one of the people who resigned yesterday said, "We reached our tipping point...America's public health is significantly in danger."
