Swansea City and Wales great Allen set to retire from Football

Allen, is out of contract at Swansea this summer and has opted to call time on a career in which he has made almost 600 club appearances and won 77 international caps after his “instinct” told him he was not going to reach next year’s World Cup.

The 35-year-old has called time on a glittering career, which included a four-year spell at Liverpool, and six years at Stoke City, but will always be remembered for his time at at boyhood club Swansea City where it all began.

Allen won his first Wales cap in 2009 having come through the ranks at Swansea, where he made his league debut as a 16-year-old in 2007.

He helped Swansea win the League One title in his full season, then played a central role as they became the first Welsh club to win promotion to the Premier League in 2011.

After a year in the top flight with Swansea, Allen followed manager Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool in a £15m deal in 2012.

He made 132 appearances for Liverpool, and was part of the side which came close to ending the Reds’ wait for a Premier League title in 2014, before joining Stoke for £13m in 2016.

Allen played more than 200 games for the Potters, staying with the club despite relegation to the Championship in 2018, before opting to rejoin Swansea when his contract expired in 2022.

Allen, memorably, was also part of the Wales team that qualified for three major tournaments, including the magical run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

Allen’s journey as a footballer will now finish with the Swans after making 250 appearances across two spells with the club he first joined at the age of nine.

“This is incredibly difficult. This is not something I’ve taken lightly, I’ve spent a lot of time pondering it,” said Allen to the media ahead of the Swans clash with Oxford.

“It’s not something I’ve taken lightly, spent a lot of time pondering it. The timing’s right. I got to 100 per cent about a month ago and I wasn’t sure how the last few weeks would go, how I’d find things, but it’s actually been a good spell really. I’ve enjoyed it.

“I’ve had a chance to reflect and take it all in. I’m really looking forward to what’s going to be my last game on Saturday.

“I’m very proud. I didn’t think I’d be sat here playing as many games as I have for clubs I have done at that level and for Wales as well.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate and as I’ve reflected over the last few weeks very grateful and thankful to everyone who has has helped me on my way to have these amazing experiences.”

“I had a chance to reflect and take it all in. I’m really looking forward to what’s going to be my last game on Saturday.”

Swansea to host Wales autumn friendly international

Wales will take on Canada at SA1 on Tuesday, 9th September (KO 7:45 pm) before taking on England at Wembley Thursday, 9th October (KO 7:45 pm), rounding off their 2025 international fixtures.

The match marks a significant return for the national side who last played in Swansea in November 2020 in a goalless draw against the USA during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last time a crowd was seen at the Swansea.com Stadium was back in March 2013, in a match against Croatia featuring current boss, Craig Bellamy.

The upcoming fixture will be the fourth meeting between Wales and Canada, with the last encounter ending in a 1-0 win for the welsh side in Wrexham back in 2004.

Wales will then face familiar rivals England in London. The two sides last met at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with previous encounters in the UEFA EURO 2016 finals and a behind-closed-doors friendly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wales’ last competitive match in front of a Wembley crowd was in 2011 under former manager Gary Speed where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in the EURO 2012 qualifiers.

These matches complete Wales’ 2025 schedule as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, kicking off against Kazakhstan on 22nd March at Cardiff City Stadium.

Ticket details for the Canada and England fixtures will be announced soon.

Bellamy confident as Wales path to the 2026 World Cup unveils kind draw

The draw for the tournament took place in Zurich this afternoon with Craig Bellamy’s side among the second seeds.

Joining Wales and Belgium in Group J are North Macedonia, Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein.

Belgium are familiar opponents for Wales, who met in qualifying for the last World Cup, where a crucial draw in the final match of the campaign was earned to clinch the runners-up spot before going on to qualify for Qatar via the play-offs. Wales faced them recently in the 2022 Nations League.

They famously beat Belgium 3-1 to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016 under Chris Coleman, but have not won any of the subsequent four meetings.

Manager Craig Bellamy will be upbeat about the draw, particularly after avoiding the likes of European champions Spain, England, Italy and the Netherlands.

The lower-seeded teams in Group J will present logistical challenges for the Welsh and see tricky away trips to the eastern parts of Europe, Bellamy though will be confident his young side can gain the results needed to challenge the Red Devils for top spot in the group.

Domenico Tedesco’s Belgian side endured a torrid Nations League campaign and have lost four out of their last five matches. Very much a team in transition, the team who, in recent years, hit the summit of the World rankings may not be the power they once were but still have some of the best players in Europe amongst their arsenal to do damage.

Wales’ World Cup qualifying campaign will kick off in March 2025 and will conclude next November. Four-team groups kick off their qualifying campaigns in September 2025.

Sixteen European nations will qualify for the finals, which will feature 48 teams for the first time.

The winners of each group qualify automatically, with the runners-up then going into play-offs in March 2026 alongside the four best-ranked Nations League group winners who did not either win their World Cup qualifying group or finish runner-up.

Manager Craig Bellamy said:

“I’m happy with the five teams, it gets the competition going very quick, and that’s what I wanted, I wanted five teams, so that’s a real positive,” said Bellamy.

“It’s been a good period, it’s a good draw.

“I’m really looking forward to this, I’m excited to work with the group, we’re all just looking forward to it, I genuinely feel this is a group we want to go and win.

“To get Belgium is great; I lived in Brussels for three years so that’s nice, there’s few players I was involved with, like Jeremy [Doku] and Zeno Debast, so it will be nice to see them.

“It’s a team I know very well, a team I’ve watched quite a lot of especially in the last five, six years.

“North Macedonia is a different challenge, Kazakhstan we’ve never drawn before, so travel and what it will entail will be very different, Liechtenstein… I’m happy, I have to be honest, it’s a good group.

“We’re going to have to do our homework really well, and hopefully try and attack and finish top of the group.”

Dream come true for Cullen as Wales power to Nations League promotion

Wales pulled off an improbable return to the Nations League’s top tier as they came from behind to beat Iceland convincingly in the Welsh capital. On a night where Montenegro unexpectedly triumphed over Turkey in the other group encounter, promotion was secured for Craig Bellamy’s side.

Turkey had started the night at the summit of Group B4, with Wales two points behind in second place and Iceland a further two points back in third.

Needing to win at Cardiff City Stadium while also hoping for a favour from Montenegro, Welsh hopes took an early hit as Andri Gudjohnsen fired Iceland ahead in the seventh minute, following up sharply after Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward had made a brilliant save from Orri Oskarsson’s header.

But 25-year-old Cullen’s first two international goals – one from Brennan Johnson’s inviting cross, the second helping Daniel James’ half-saved shot over the line – put Wales in front at the interval.

The Welsh ‘Messi from Kilgetty’ set up Johnson to score Wales’ third with a cool finish after the break, before Harry Wilson struck his fourth goal in five international appearances with a sumptuous dipping effort from 20 yards.

“It is a dream come true for me,” said Cullen after the win.

“Going into this game, once I knew I was starting, I was thinking it was about time I got my first international goal.

“It went nicely and I got two and then I got an assist for Bren [Brennan Johnson], so a perfect night for me really.

“Its something we set out to do. We knew we couldn’t control what was going on in the game, but we really wanted to put our stamp on this game and put on a performance like that and win convincingly.

“I think it is credit to him [Craig Bellamy] and the staff and the amount of work they put in day-to-day in between camps.

“It’s nothing more than they deserve and it makes it so much more enjoyable for us. We want to go out there for the fans and the staff and put on a performance they can be proud of.

“I don’t think there was a better way than this to start off the manager’s reign and hopefully we can take it into the qualifiers. We can go into that campaign full of confidence.”
