A whitethroat bird perched on a branch facing towards the camera, roughly. Its wings and tail are fanned out. It is cream and beige coloured. Behind it are areas of green and dark woodland.

A grey heron - that looks like a dinosaur - perched facing right on a branch in front of green ivy coloured trees. It has a cream body, grey and dark grey wings, white/grey head, and a pointed yellow beak.

"Alright Mr Jackson, I'm ready for my close-up." A different take on 'a bird's eye view,' and a more typical portrait shot, of the Common Whitethroat. Taken on different days in early May but in the same area at Brandon Marsh near Coventry, these pics may feature the same individual, who was kind enough to give me a couple of brief photo opportunities.

A 'head and shoulders' shot of a singing Whitethroat. The body is brown, the head greyish-brown, and the throat, surprise, surprise, is white. The eye is a reddish-brown in colour with a small black pupil.

A branching twig with leaves and clusters of blossom, on which is perched a Whitethroat, facing to the left. The head, upperparts and wings are brown, the undersides whitish, and yes, the throat is white.

An old stone viaduct peeking out among masses of trees and bushes. Only one main arch can be seen, with a second arch hidden behind a sprawling green tree on the right. At the left dark trees rise up, also covering the viaduct. Below it is a grassy meadow area. A tarmac path runs under the viaduct over to the right.

A northern marsh orchid. It is a mass of purple/pink big flowers on top of a thick green stem. The flowers are huge, with different shades and details of purple and white.

A whitethroat bird perched on a branch running up diagonally left in the picture. Its feet are spread out and it is facing to the left, with its beak wide open, chirping away. It has a light brownish back and wings, a light grey tummy, light greyish brown back of the head, black stripes on the top of its head, and a white fluffy and slightly black in places furry ruff under its beak and chin area.

It is perched facing to the left, with its left wing raised, and its neck and head tilted, as it carefully preens itself. It has a very curious expression on its face, and is extremely fluffy looking. It has a bright yellow beak, and a lot of variation in colour can be seen in its feathers and plumage.

A small grey and brown Dunnock sits at the top of a dry bramble stem which rises above nettles and brambles. The background is a (intentionally) blurred mix of yellow and greens

A female Stonechat sits on a dry bramble stem, it's feet grasping the spaces between dangerous looking thorns. It is a mostly mottled brown colour with a narrow white band around it's neck and a orange tinge to it's breast. It's head is slightly tilted to the right and it looks quizzically towards the camera

A whitethroat sits amongst dead branches covered in lichen. It is a small, mostly brown bird with a buff underside and the eponymous white throat. It's beak is open in song
