Apparently today is #WorldBookDay (why am I always late to these parties?)!

My #photography has been almost entirely self-taught, and most of that has come through reading books on the subject. I was a bookworm before I was a photographer, after all.

#Creatives, what's one book that has had the largest impact on your work? Let me know in the comments! Mine was Understanding Exposure (and others in his series) by Brian Peterson

Today’s the most beautiful day of the year in Barcelona, a day celebrating books! Sant Jordi!
People line up for favorite authors to sign books as if writers played for Barça. Streets are closed for bookstands. It’s a booklover’s (me) dream.

Happy #WorldBookDay ! So, um, this is a special one for me because this year is the first time I HAVE BOOK. It's about real-world zombifiers—fungi (yes, like in #TheLastOfUs) worms, viruses and wasps—and their invertebrate victims.

OK, so it may not be the coziest of reads, but if zombies delight you perhaps this will too!

And if you buy a copy through @HopkinsPress , use the code HLFE25 to get a 40% discount, good through 4/30.

On a ferry between Τἠνος and Πειραιάς, Hanno Buddenbrook plays the ultimate piano improvisation before being unceremoniously disposed of by typhoid fever. I have never oscillated between pure adoration of a literary master and thinking "you lazy fuck" that quickly. But even that lame move is executed masterfully. This concludes my tour of the Mann family. Funnily enough, Thomas was the last one I discovered.

For World Book Day—i.e. today—I am sharing links to my posts about the two books I discussed most during my first year here:

• WHAT TECHNOLOGY WANTS by Kevin Kelly.

• THE IDEAS OF PARTICLE PHYSICS 4th edition by James Dodd and Ben Gripaios.

Both are among the best nonfiction books I've ever read. Some excerpts are provided via these links; maybe they'll pique your interest. The links are in chronological order.

Mindly.Socialmindsets (@setsly@mindly.social)Attached: 1 image @physics@a.gup.pe I am reading the 4th edition of THE IDEAS OF PARTICLE PHYSICS (a refresher, since I had read and loved both the 2nd and 3rd). I'm struck by its reminder that the weak force carriers, shown on page 117—in the middle of each diagram—weren't even detected until the 1980s. For a thing so crucial, it seems like such a recent time: President Reagan in office, some Millennials already born, etc. Of course, other big particle detections were still to come. #physics https://www.cambridge.org/lt/universitypress/subjects/physics/particle-physics-and-nuclear-physics/ideas-particle-physics-4th-edition

Was not aware it was #WorldBookDay , but I am currently reading GUARDS! GUARDS! This will be my first Terry Pratchett novel, and I absolutely love it. I’m about 80% finished.

Feels good to read again. I’d been slacking in that department as of late.
