If only we could get #Akira on #4K #BluRay in as high a quality as #GhostInTheShell. Sadly the current 4K release is far too heavy with DNR to bother with.
Akira, the 1988 cult animated film based on the amazing manga series published between 1982 and 1990, is an awesome technical achievement on almost every level.
Except it makes no fucking sense at all.
The source material is expansive in scope and steeped in Japanese history and culture which makes it extremely difficult to adapt into a feature film - even when written and directed by the original author.
It's been sitting with Warner Bros for 25 years and has had various writers and directors attached to it. Despite sinking millions into getting it made, it looks as though Warner have finally given up.
This excellent article from Film Stories covers the background in a lot more detail. Including some links to a storyboard treatment of the film when it was mooted to be relocated to 'New Manhattan'.
