A short interview with Matthew Shapton, an apple farmer in Ontario, explaining some interesting facts of farming. We do not lose the heritage apple varieties due to climate change, but due to lack of demand - people like and buy more of the sweet varieties. Unfortunately long time preservation in seed banks is not possible, because apple trees are exclusively grown vegetatively.

Apples affected by unseasonal temperatures. Its called watercore. Used to be rare here, our climate was great for apple growing. Tasmania is also known as the “apple isle”. Lately, many apples look like this - stull tastes good though!#ClimateChange #apples

In 2023 we had a bumper crop of apples from the tree in our yard. In 2024, there were none. My wife understand these cycles better than I do 😀🍎 (I bet @meganL / @ml does too!)

The tree is in bllom right now. Looks like later this summer we'll have another big crop of apples! And I'm always grateful when that happens!

@pomological Rome Beauty remains the best keeper apple for storage over the winter. An orchard near me continues to have some available, but they have reduced the number of trees of Rome Beauty in favour of more recently developed varieties. Last year was not a good year for apples here in Ohio, and the orchard sold out of the few Rome Beauty apples they had before I was able to get there. I hope that this autumn, I shall once again be able to find Rome Beauty at the orchard.

OMG GUYS
We have so many Apples 🍎 🍏 forming on our two juvenile (as opposed to newly planted) apple trees!! The Blushing Delight Columnar has the most. It is the most vigorous though and most protected from the wind, but the Northern Spy has many as well!!

This is the first year any of our new trees since the pandemic have borne fruit.
