Kicking off the winter orchid season (a little late this year!) with a quick scout around Genoa and Gipsy Point, VIC. Still several small patches of Pterostylis concinna (Trim Greenhood) out growing alongside three other greenhood species in some places in early August. P. concinna is usually the earliest greenhood out at this location with flowers seen as early as May.

Good numbers of greenhoods out now after steady winter rain is a good sign for the spring orchids which will follow. Much wetter underfoot than the last two drier winters in SE Gippsland.

Turn the Snowy Mountains national park into a massive car park

Sydney motorist: "Every time we drive up I'm always like, 'They need to expand the car park.'"

"Roads to the ski resorts are managed by Transport for NSW but the car parks, which are ON national park land, are managed by the resorts themselves. There's more than 6,000 car parking spaces across the ski fields in the Snowy Mountains."

"National parks are not supposed to be full of cars.We don't want to be polluting streams and waterways with runoff from car parks. The ecology and the environment is more important than us going skiing."

1/2 #15August or #Assumption was a magic time long before Christianism.
#Myths and #rituals talk about #nature and #biodiversity of ancient times. But with the #climateCrisis, we are confronted with phenomena of shifting #baselines and "planetary amnesia".

How can we live with change when even traditions of the annual cycle no longer work? Can we redefine our #storytelling connections?

The biogeographic history of cacao is choc-full of human influence 🍫🌱

A recent study examined cacao’s historical distribution by analyzing published literature, over 15,000 GBIF-mediated occurrence records and remote sensing data with land-use profiles to distinguish native from introduced ranges. 🌎

Researchers found that human activity—not wildlife dispersal—was likely the main driver of cacao's range expansion.
