Snowbird of ParadiseSilver Adventures BlanketOne of my hobbies involves making blankets out of miscellaneous balls of yarn. Sometimes it is leftover yarn I have sitting in my crafting cupboard, sometimes it is yarn I find at thrift stores, and sometimes it is yarn donated to the local volunteer centre. The volunteer centre has a group called Angel Crafters who make knitted or crocheted squares and this group has been so successful that there are now too many squares and not enough people to put them together. Last year I volunteered to put some squares together and produced a few blankets that were subsequently donated to people living in local shelters.A few months ago I dropped by with some crocheted squares and, when I was told they could not take any more squares, I offered once again to turn them into blankets. This conversation was overheard by the woman who leads the Silver Adventures Cafe which is a group of seniors who meet monthly to learn something new. She asked me if I would lead a workshop teaching the group how to join the squares to make blankets and I happily agreed. In the following weeks I prepared a PowerPoint presentation complete with links to useful YouTube videos, some pictures of my completed blankets, and a step-by-step approach from layout to completion using either a needle or a crochet hook. It would have been great, but unfortunately the venue’s technology did not have the necessary cable to link to my laptop. So, I winged it without the PowerPoint. Fortunately, I had prepared a handout that included the video links I had intended to use and we were able to show them via a different computer. After that, it was a matter of reading the room and trying to accommodate a wide variety of skill sets. Some of the attendees were experienced in knitting or crocheting, and some had never held a crochet hook. I began by showing the group how to make a slip knot, and was surprised when one person told me she had never learned that before. After the workshop was over, some of the Silver Adventurers volunteered to make blankets and took bags of squares home with them, so I consider that a success. I took home the squares that the group had joined during the workshop and since then I have been working on them to put together a blanket. Given that the participants abilities varied considerably, I am pleased that the end product turned out as well as it did. Snowbird of ParadiseEconomical DruthersA local volunteer community encourages people to donate knitted or crocheted squares that can be made into blankets. Those blankets are then given to people who need them, often to people in shelters and temporary housing. As someone who likes to crochet while watching TV, I saw this as a beneficial use of both my time and miscellaneous leftover yarn. Accordingly, last winter I donated a couple of blankets I had made and I also put together squares that others had made.This winter I happened upon some very inexpensive yarn at a thrift store and used it to make squares that I hoped would one day become a blanket. I also used up my remaining supply of leftover yarn and these together created 68 squares.As I looked at the instructions I had received from the volunteer group, I realized I didn’t have enough squares for a queen-size blanket which was their preference. A queen size requires 90 eight-inch squares and a twin size requires 54. When I first asked about this, my assumption was that they would need more twin-size blankets but it seems that there are more families in need than single individuals. So, the polite suggestion was that the larger blanket would be of more use. My dilemma, then, was what to do with my inadequate supply of squares. Should I make more squares or donate what I had? I decided to donate what I had, but when I got to the volunteer centre I was told that they no longer accepted donations of squares! They already had lots of squares in storage and, instead, needed volunteers to put squares together. I said I would be happy to do that and they said they would be in touch when they had taken a batch out of the storage facility. They also said that they no longer had a supply of yarn that they could give me; the yarn fund had been exhausted. My 68 squares, which were not quite enough for a blanket, still needed additional squares so I visited a couple of local thrift stores to see if they had any yarn I could use to finish the project. Unfortunately, I was surprised to find that the price of the donated skeins was quite high. It was too high to be a bargain and almost as much as I would pay for yarn on sale at a local department store. I was torn. I wanted to finish the blanket and I wanted to support the thrift store, but I didn’t want to pay so much for miscellaneous yarn. I would rather pay a little more and choose the texture, weight, and colour than I preferred.I went online to find out the sale prices for yarn at the local craft stores and I also checked out Amazon. My preference is to shop local when possible, but when you are trying to put together a blanket out of leftover yarn, you lean towards the least expensive option. Snowbird of Paradise A few weeks ago, just before we had a heavy snowfall, I visited <a href="https://www.volunteernanaimo.ca/vancouver-island-community-knitters-association/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Volunteer Nanaimo</a> to drop off a couple of blankets I had crocheted. I had been wondering where to donate them and through a Google search found this organization that, among many other things, donates blankets to community members who need them. When I was there, I mentioned that their website indicated that they collect knitted or crocheted squares and asked if I could contribute. The woman I was talking to said that they currently had an embarrassment of riches in the form of a large supply of squares. What they needed, she said, was someone who could put them together. “Oh,” I said confidently. “I can do that,” even though this was not something I had ever done before. I figured it was probably within my capabilities, especially with the help of YouTube videos. Accordingly, I was given a big bag of knitted squares and a couple of balls of yarn. The timing was perfect because the next day the snow fell and I was housebound for about ten days. Instead of just watching bad television, I was able to watch bad television and put together a blanket! After I had done that, and after the roads were clear, I took the blanket to Volunteer Nanaimo where they were very grateful. I mentioned that I had some leftover squares and, if they had some more, I could make another blanket. Sure enough, after a quick trip to a back room, they provided me with another supply of squares. These were more diverse than the previous set because the sizes were not all the prescribed 8″ x 8″, and many were made from multiple colours of yarn. They were also of varying yarn weights, so the task of piecing them together would be a little more challenging than the previous effort. Fortunately, this is my kind of puzzle. I made good use of the bed in my guest room in laying out the squares to create the required size of blanket. Volunteer Nanaimo preferred something to fit a twin bed and asked for a blanket six squares by nine squares, so that is what I put together. Some squares were a little smaller and some a little more than eight inches, but knitting is stretchable enough that I was able to use most of them. Only one had to be discarded.I thought it would be fun to use up all the multicoloured squares and include the single-colour squares only to make up the necessary size. Once I saw the mixture of colours and yarns, I decided to add to the variety by turning some squares sideways. Instead of all the knitted rows being aligned, some went one way and some went another. After a bit of rearranging, I realized although there would never be a perfect layout, I could be content with a sort of balanced melange. As I was putting this together, it occurred to me that this was a very appropriate solution, under the circumstances. The squares had been made by a number of knitters who were not known to me and probably not known to each other, either. They were all using leftover yarn from a variety of different projects, and the squares they had created reflected both the colours of their work and the type of yarn they worked with. Some were probably related to seasonal projects, some I could tell were originally for sturdy things like slippers, and some were for finer items such as shawls or baby clothes.It pleases me to think that all these miscellaneous balls of surplus yarn came together through the kindness of strangers to create blankets for neighbours they will probably never meet.
