We feel the need, the need to read!!!
It's Storytime!!!!
Under Fives Storytime is free, & takes place every Thursday & Friday from 9.30
Sin Bin Island! Doug Naylor (yes, *that* Doug, the Red Dwarf co-creator!) has a most gigglesome new novel for younger readers, out now from David Fickling Books.
"Go Tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here obedient to their laws we lie"
Sparta: the Rise & Fall of an Ancient Superpower by Andrew Bayliss was delivered (on a shield, of course) from Profile Books
A classic of Brit-horror, a fiftieth anniversary edition of The Fog by the legendary bestseller, James Herbert. Betting a number of us read Herbert's books back in the day! A massively bestselling author back in the 70s and 80s.
This is simply gorgeous work: Giant, by Mollie Ray, who was tagged as one of the emerging indie comics talents to watch for by Broken Frontier (a top UK site covering Indie comics).
It is entirely wordless, the emotional story of a family dealing with illness is carried purely by the artwork, layout & framing (also making it ideal for anyone with dyslexia or reading problems).
I strongly suspect I will be adding this one to my own collection...
#WhatWereReading : Joe enjoyed the Japanese bestseller, Dinner at the Night Library by Hika Harada, translated by Philip Gabriel.
Otaha starts working in the library, which archives the literary collection of deceased authors, and where the live-in chef prepares meals based on those in novels.
Ideal for those who enjoyed Before the Coffee Gets Cold, or Days at the Morasaki Bookshop. Out now from Scriber Books
"Sweet dreams are made of this, who am I to disagree..."
How fabulous is this Annie Lennox Retrospective from Rizzoli Books? And what do you think of my Annie Lennox impression?!?!?
This book goes up to 11...
The Story of Spinal Tap, signed by the legendary Rob Reiner, has just arrived from Simon & Schuster.
Rock'n'roll!!! We're looking at our neighbours in nearby Thorne Records and waving this in their direction!
We feel the need, the need to read...
Busy Under Fives Storytime today!! Under Fives Storytime takes place every Thursday and Friday from 9.30, and is totally free. Stories and stickers!!!
#WhatWereReading : Joe found Darryl Cunningham's well-researched graphic biography, Elon Musk, American Oligarch, a fascinating & accessible read.
Exploring his family history from a grandfather who decided Aprtheid era South Africa looked like a good place to raise a family, to building his American empire and the complex relationships with colleagues, collaborators & friends (and then often ex-colleagues, collaborators and friends!).
Cunningham has a knack for taking complicated material and delivering it in a deceptively simple cartooning style - previous graphic works have included Billionaires (which sits well with this book), Supercrash (the 2008 financial meltdown) and Science Tales. Highly recommended.
Out now from Seven Stories Press
The #ScienceFiction section may be groaningly full, but there's always room for a new @garethlpowell !
Who Will You Save? is out now from Titan Books.
"There's no business like showbusiness... "
We think Hello, Broadway! from Dorling Kindersley is a fabulous introduction for younger readers to the wonderful world of musicals (complete with sounds!)
Annual stocktake day. Please ignore the sounds of distressed cursing coming from the bookshop...
The bookshop I volunteer at is after more volunteers.
If you like hanging out with books, chatting to people about books, and generally just pottering about with books, get involved!
See you, Jimmy !
You wait ages for a good history book on James VI & I, then three come along at the same time.
Stocktake Alert
It's time to call all the books to stand up & be counted; we will be closed on Monday 1st September for our annual stocktake.
Apologies for any inconvenience, & please ignore frustrated shouts from the bookshop that day.
Back as usual on Tuesday 2nd!
"I believe I can fly..."
Clive Penguin Learns to Fly, Sort Of, a new picture book from Huw Lewis Jones & Ben Sanders, out now from Little Tiger Books
