Devin Prater :blind:
Y'all I am just plain inconsolable right now. All Google is doing for Braille commands on Android TalkBack is using the same command set as BRLTTY. How do I know? Well see the Braille Edge display has a few tons of buttons. And I pressed them, in different combinations. Almost none of the non-typing keys do anything. At all. No error tone or anything. Because taking care with individual devices what's that haha. But something strange happened when I hit the right pad left arrow and right pad right arrow together. It made an error noise. Well I decided to go into a text field and try it. There, it tried to paste text. So then I looked into the BRLTTY commands, and yep, there it is. That command pastes at the screen cursor in BRLTTY.

You may then ask, "well why not just read the command list?" Because the command list does not include any special buttons on the braille displays. Because surely all blind people just use the Orbit Reader and NLS EReader right? /s Because we need many more blind people in positions of power. Also the Up and Down thumb keys on the NLS EReader I'm pretty sure move to the previous and next item, although it could be prev/next line, I'm not sure right now. So yeah, google is just hoping that BRLTTY will take care of them. So freaking heart breaking. Like they could have gone those and mapped commands to these extra buttons because that's kinda what they're there for. But nah lol let's just go go go. Meh. At least the expansion of the Bluetooth keyboard commands maybe hints that we'll soon(tm) be able to customize the Braille commands. Maybe. Would be ice. Because my goodness it's great to do so on iOS! I can have the left set of arrow keys move by heading and link, and the right one for previous/next item and rotor option. And up+right to go to top, and down+right to go to bottum, and up+left to scroll to top of list, and down+left to scroll to bottum of list. Stuff like that.

#Android #talkback #google #braille #blind #accessibility
