We are so back boys. Plan the parade. Never doubted it for even one second.
Never have I been so pessimistic before #SWFC 's first game of the season. Will settle for plucky, battling defeat at Leicester today.
Here is a #fox for our hosts #LCFC (and an #owl for us).
- A fox in the undergrowth - 19th century, English
- Owl on a grave - 1836, Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840 Germany)
Unsure if Wrexham are playing well or Southampton are just maintaining their form from last season.

Ipswich Town kick off the season in a couple of hours. Good luck lads, let’s get this campaign off to a flyer.
Looking at the #EFL Championship the only predictions I can make at the moment is Ipswich win the league as they have the best squad & the most money #ITFC
At the opposite end it's Sheffield Wednesday who are rock solid certainties for relegation unless they get sold fast as their owner is killing the club #SWFC
#ukpol #fascist #EDL #EFL etc etc. Y'all know my views on this piece of useless English detritus (despite the fact he wears a tartan 'Robinson plaid' waistcoat), you need to ask who's funding him? Hint, the F word who in turn is backed by the even richer Tice. They have not fallen out, it's a blind. No complacency peeps. The bastards are inside every boardroom and Tory constituency. #EUFM #SODEM

Yay - football is back!
I never imagined that creating a crossword would be so challenging. I made this one for my students. The words to solve it are cooking techniques.
After a delicious lunch break, we're back with some serious quantitative #CorpusLinguistics work by Tony Berber Sardinha & Marilisa Shimazumi who are presenting "A multi-dimensional analysis and text typology of learner writing based on the International Corpus of Learner English". #VAR4LCR #EFL #ESL
In her #VAR4LCR talk entitled "AI meets academic writing: ChatGPT's impact on L2 linguistic profiles", Jennifer Thewissen is sharing the results of an early study on English L2 learners' use of #ChatGPT in an Academic English class. The number of errors in the students' texts was only marginally lower in the texts written/revised using ChatGPT. Those texts had a much higher lexical diversity – although this was frequently the result of what Jennifer referred to as vague "word salad". This study will soon be published in the Journal of Second Language Writing.
Andrea Ágnes Reményi is starting the next block of WiP reports #VAR4LCR with a study that came out of a real-life problem: the need to validate a high-stake English L2 university exam in Hungary. Her talk is entitled "A new syntactic complexity indicator in L2-English written texts: Verb phrase versatility" and I look forward to finding out what she means by "verb phrase versatility".
After a coffee break involving fruit and macarons #VAR4LCR, Anna Zaffinelli is presenting a WiP report on the creation of an exciting, new AI-assisted L2 writing corpus. Watch this project! #EFL #GenAI @corpuslinguistics
Next up #VAR4LCR María Belén Díez-Bedmar is speaking on "Exploring task type effects on L2 accuracy profiles: Narrative vs. email writing by B1 Spanish EFL learners". This study is based on the FineDesc Learner Corpus, which is a manually error-tagged controlled corpus of 200 texts written by 100 Spanish EFL learners that allows for many interesting comparisons: https://web.ujaen.es/investiga/finedesc/index.php.
The first research talk #VAR4LCR is presented by Valentin Werner and Lisa-Christine Altendorf on "Register and task variation in young German learner English: A (quasi-)longitudinal look at complexity". Congratulations to Oldham Athletic, who have just beaten Southend United 3-2 in the National League play-off final at Wembley, earning promotion back to the Football League.
I used to go and watch The Latics regularly in the early 70s, with my Dad, when they were in the old Division 4, at Boundary Park, a.k.a. Ice Station Zebra.
