#DouglasAdams once wrote about a "mechanical monk". A labor saving device for belief. To relieve people of the burden of believing in things.

Reading about people using LLMs to automate the emotional labor of writing a loved one's obituary. Getting real-life-mechanical-monk vibes. #llm #eliza

@jeremyjanzen that's awesome!

I have ELIZA on my Atari ST and I remember thinking it was a dumb program at first. Later I found out there were actually people who talked to ELIZA as a form of therapy, it got me to try it again with a new pair of eyes.

I left behind my teenager "haw haw this is dumb" attitude and spent half an hour suspending disbelief and just kept talking to it as if I didn't already know it was a program.

I more than suspended my disbelief. There were moments when I couldn't say that if I ran into #ELIZA in a chatroom after a bad day that I could easily tell it wasn't human. Once I committed to talking to it like I thought it might be a sympathetic person, I did experience the occasional moment when I felt like someone was really on the other side.

Ever since that experience, I'd say I'm actually a fan of ELIZA. It was an interesting experience to feel that ambiguity come out of nowhere even when I knew it was a bot.

@Priyajsridhar
What makes a being "human" or coded as human?

I think we can care about beings without coding them as human. I carry on detailed conversations with my cat, Piper aka the Pink Princess aka Piper No Dont-Do-That, but she's a furperson. No opposable thumbs . . .

What is really going to make this conversation complicated is AI. Back in the 1970s, I thought Eliza was an actual person, not a program. Ai is waaay better now. Food for thought.

Reading this transcript of a conversation with Noam Chomsky on Large Language Models.

What is your view on Turing’s perspective and ChatGPT’s capabilities as a form of thinking? Do you think this is just a problem of definition?

Noam Chomsky: It’s like asking whether submarines swim. You want to call that swimming? Okay, submarine swim. What the programs are doing is, again, scanning huge amounts of data, finding statistical regularities enough so that you can make a fair guess as to what the next word will be in some sequence. Is that thinking? Does submarine swim? It’s the same question.

The Singju Post · Transcript: Noam Chomsky on ChatGPT, AI, Universal Grammar, Language and MindHere is the transcript and summary of a Practical Wisdom Podcast conversation with Noam Chomsky titled ‘ChatGPT, Universal Grammar and the Human Mind: Unlocking Language and AI Mysteries’. Listen to the audio version here: TRANSCRIPT:

I've really grown to believe that what we're seeing with this AI/LLM phenomena with big tech, is a bunch of megacorps who are both:

(1) Desperate for the next big ever expanding arena of tech; as their traditional moneymakers have slowed down.

(2) Desperate to once again plant their flag on a foundational commerce changing technology; and get the lead ahead of their competitors; BEFORE the market picks the one to three companies who will win, and control the technology for consumers forever more.

In that vein; you can kind of see it fitting in with all the hype cycles and tulips of recent years. It has the same artificial rent seeking drive as Blockchain, NFTs, the Metaverse, etc.

I fear every time these megacorps don't find the "next big thing" the next verse of this ever looping song just gets louder and more desperate.

ERGO the next thing they decide to fixate on will be even worse. #capitalsim #AI #llm #eliza #megacorps #bigtech
