jbz<p>「 While polyester took a few decades to lose its appeal, GenAI is already feeling a bit cheesy. We're only a few years into the AI Revolution, and Facebook and X are filled to the brim with “AI slop.” Everyone around the world has near-equal access to these tools, and low-skilled South and Southeast Asian content farmers are the most active creators because their wages are low enough for the platforms' economic incentives to be attractive 」</p><p><a href="https://culture.ghost.io/genai-is-our-polyester/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">culture.ghost.io/genai-is-our-</span><span class="invisible">polyester/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ai</span></a> <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/genai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genai</span></a> <a href="https://indieweb.social/tags/aislop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aislop</span></a></p>

I find it mentally exhausting to socially engineer a program in place of processing the problem myself.</p>

Henryk Plötz<p>If <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/ProjectHailMary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ProjectHailMary</span></a> were written today, it would include The Sum Total Of All Human Knowledge in the form of a <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/GenAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenAI</span></a> chatbot. And a mandatory side plot would have the protagonist, a well-read, well-educated scientist, constantly battle with MaryGPT over "use glue to keep pizza toppings in place" style responses to life-and-death queries.</p>

Marjon<p>The problem here is that people get new ideas by thinking critically. They combine existing ideas and come up with new solutions to problems. We're a creative, problem-solving species.</p><p>It's exactly that skill that's getting lost when people start to depend on AI. LLM's and generative AI are never going to get new ideas. Because all data they've been trained on consisted of old ideas.</p><p>We need new ideas. 2/2</p><p><a href="https://a11y.info/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://a11y.info/tags/LLM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLM</span></a> <a href="https://a11y.info/tags/genAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genAI</span></a></p>
Marjon<p>Had a discussion about AI where I said I don't like that all content gets scraped and fed into a LLM.</p><p>Another person said that people 'steal' each other's ideas all the time, in fact, all of society consists of shared ideas. So there's not really a problem.</p><p>1/2</p><p><a href="https://a11y.info/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://a11y.info/tags/LLM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLM</span></a> <a href="https://a11y.info/tags/genAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genAI</span></a></p>
David<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@nixCraft" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>nixCraft</span></a></span> For any language and platform in which the developer has fluency, <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/GenAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenAI</span></a> can be an active hindrance. It takes far more time and cognitive effort to coax a chatbot in plain English (or another natural language) into producing adequate code than to simply write it oneself. (Sure, it can quickly regurgitate a weighted-average hot mess of all the code others have written in a similar context before, along with a random sampling of all the security and other defects ever implemented in that context, but that doesn't count as adequate.) </p><p>The only time I've seen it be useful was for generating a first draft in a language one's previously never used for a platform one's previously never programmed. And even then, the generated code required repeated correction: enough so that the bot saved only a few minutes net over reading the documentation, and then only because the documentation was crap. </p><p>Those few minutes' developer time cost an order of magnitude more in electricity, let alone the other costs (such as server maintenance). But then again, the point isn't really cost effectiveness. The real point of gen AI is to make more highly educated workers expendable. </p><p>The real point is to give the C-suite suits more power over everyone else.</p>
