At first glance it seems obscure, even esoteric, but given some thought it becomes obvious that an easy accessibility win is routinely being ignored.
Hey, @videolan I love you, but you rate 'Could Do Better' in this class. Maybe have a look pls?

In looking through this I see 2 huge flaws -
1. (beyond mastodon)These are big tech extensions/parts & thusly they're privacy disrespecting pieces of trash.
2. On the accessibility group/features - they're really only meant for #VisuallyImpaired & #HearingImpaired folks, beyond one that's for temperature regulation issues
*I'm not saying the groups these are meant for don't matter but the one I'm in & need help with is #spinal.
Looking for advice.
Spouse is #HearingImpaired from working in a factory for 40 years.
Trying to find a way for us to be able to watch TV together without me wearing earplugs to protect my own hearing, while having it loud enough for spouse.
Having the TV loud enough for spouse to hear means it's loud enough to disturb the neighbours (we live in a flat). For comparison - I listen to the TV at level 8 or 9 but spouse needs 28+!
Any suggestions to help narrow down my search for a solution?

Am not autistic or something "similar".
But definitely would have a problem with background music at a meeting.
I seem to have a problem though with the nowaday habit to have *everywhere* and all the time some background noise or music added. #yt #news #podcasts ...
Why the hell one would want to make it more difficult to listen to someone/the real content? #distraction #hearingimpaired (not in my case but still) #inclusion
Will never understand.
The enshittification of AI has lead to the choice of AI used by VLC to be groaned at. I even saw a post cross my feed of someone looking for a replacement for VLC.
VLC is working on on-device realtime captioning. This has nothing to do with generating images or video using AI. This has nothing to do with LLMs.
(edit: There's claims VLC is using a local LLM. It will use whisper.cpp, and not be using OpenAI's models. I don't know which models they will be using. I cannot find any reference to VLC using a LLM.)
While it would be preferred to use human generated captions for better accuracy, this is not always possible. This means a lot of video media is inaccessible to those with hearing impairment.
What VLC is doing is something that will contribute to accessibility in a big way.
AI transcription is still not perfect. It has its problems. But this is one of those things that we should be hoping to advance.
I'm not looking to replace humans in creating captions. I think we're very far from ever being able to do this correctly without humans. But as I said, there's a ton of video content that simply do not have captions available, human generated or not.
So long as they're not trying to manipulate the transcription using GenAI means, this is the wrong one to demonize.
People love to hate on #GenAI, but it really is a godsend for #VisuallyImpaired people, especially around image descriptions. But it's also massive for #HearingImpaired people too, in terms of auto-captioning. And probably a bunch of other disabilities too. Even if you hate #AI, think of all those applications.

Deaf Awareness Week There is not only one type of deafness, one diagnosis, one cause and only one method that deaf people use to communicate. This is a fantastic article on the Escape Collective on cycling with hearing loss:
"For people with severe hearing loss, listening is not automatic or passive; it is hard, multi-sensory work, an all-encompassing cognitive load. Solo rides, as ever, were an escape, a solace of simple pedal strokes" https://escapecollective.com/ride-sounds/?mc_cid=b390fc5caa&mc_eid=fc31b4c0ad

This is a weird request, but I figure the worst I can get for it is silence. I'm totally #blind and have very bad hearing. To set up a device through its inaccessible software, I'm in need of a sighted person for about an hour and a half to two hours who can access a computer remotely, speaks and reads English, and can describe images and graphs. The person needs to be quite patient with follow-up questions, needs to be willing to repeat if needed, as well as be able to click on items and describe what happens on the screen. The person needs to be fairly detail oriented because some of the images appear to have arrows and other ways to expand them, according to the manual. Though I'm happy to be reasonable, I have no clue how much to offer as payment, this is my first request of this kind. I'm posting it because I know we have some blind people here who may be able to point me towards someone who has done this before and may be willing to do it for such a short period. Boosts welcome, indeed, they're appreciated. #hearingimpaired #software #A11Y #accessibility #remote
Neil Gaiman wrote on Facebook,
"If you are hearing impaired, or just like closed captions, and were frustrated by the closed captions of Good Omens Season 2 not bearing much relationship to what the characters were actually saying, I am delighted to tell you that new, corrected, accurate closed captions have just been uploaded and are there waiting for you."
This is amazing! Subtitles in real-time, for the hearing impaired!
2/2 I would love to understand how an ASL version of movies or TV shows helps (beyond closed captioning) those who need it, so that I can better advocate that it, along with Audio Description, should be a part of every major new TV or movie release. Can anyone who uses ASL explain to me the added benefits?

1/2 I am an avid user of Audio Description (AD) services that come along with movies and TV shows. I wish they were available 100% of the time. I am happy to see that Marvel Entertainment, makers of many popular shows and films, just released an American Sign Language version of a recent movie. I assume it is in addition to closed captioning. Link: https://www.marvel.com/articles/movies/ant-man-asl-disney-plus

Kuuntelin juuri 2,5 tunnin pituisen #Youtube-podcastin.
