On a white BG, one pitcher. It's facing toward us and we're looking at the underside of the hood from a bug's eye view - deep red veining with many "windows", and hairs that point down into the pitcher. THe pitcher body is greenish and the veining/windows continue down into it.

Four colour studies of the flower and emerging leaf of a young jack-in-the-pulpit. All on stark white background. The spadix is the reproductive part of the plant, visible here as the pale green cylindrical object standing up in the middle of the flower (which is the male part of the inflorescence, the female flowers are near the base). The spathe is the modified leaf-like structure the surrounds it and folds over the top like a cap to keep the rain off, pale green at the base darkening to deep green and reddish at the cap part, with very pale green ribs running from just above the base to the very tip. There are water droplets on the cap. In a couple of the shots there is also an emergent leaf visible, with the three leaflets in the latin name just beginning to unfurl. It also has raindrops on it.

Malva sylvestris mauritiana, Blue Mallow. A spectacular perennial garden plant native to the Middle East and surrounding regions, and completely edible as well.

Oemleria cerasiformis, osoberry. An open raceme of pendant flowers on long pedicels, with small white petals. I think these are male flowers - you can't quite make it out at this resolution but the stamens are fully developed and pollen-bearing. We're looking at the flowers from the side.

Oemleria cerasiformis, osoberry. Looking up into a group of flowers from below. I think these are female - vestigal stamens without pollen, and visible ovaries. Grey sky in the backgorund.

Ribes sanguineum, red-flowered currant. A raceme of flowers handging from a twig. At the base of the raceme, three leaves, sort of five-lobed cordate with deep creasing. The flower cluster is opening from the top down; four flowers are open and there are many more buds waiting. The sepals are pink and open wide, looking like petals, and the much smaller white petals remain in a tube-like shape sheltering the stamens & pistil.

Salix, willow. Against a completely blurred out light grey background, a twig with four flowering staminate (pollen-producing) catkins. On each catkin, the unopened pollinia are bright orange, and the open ones are bright yellow with pollen; the rest of the structure is a pale green that contrasts pleasingly with the orange. When the garden was planted ca 1984, several species of willow were included, so this volunteer tree might be a cross of two of those trees.

Mahonia. Against a blurry green background, a cluster of bright yellow flowers and greenish buds. When the garden was planted, 40 years ago, several species of Mahonia were included. This plant is a volunteer, and so is likely a hybrid.

Muscari x armeniacum, grape hyacinth cultivar. In the foreground one spike of flowers, each of which is a tiny cerulean bell hanging from the stem by a short pedicel. The lower ones are open; the opening has a narrow white rim.

Narcissus hybrid, daffodil. Tepals long and narrow, standing straight out, creamy yellow with a slightly darker midrib. Corona short, wide, ruffled, golden yellow. A bit similar to N. 'Jack Snipe' but larger. Blurry background of leaves and more flowers. Here and there a few raindrops.

Prunus hybrid, tiny yellow plums. Nearest us, a couple of twiggy branches, with many small white flowers typical of plums, fiver ovate petals, prominent white and gold stamens. Blurry background includes more of the tree and some sky and grass. This tree was either a volunteer, or the root stock took over. It bloom and fruits very early, before any of the other plums.

Against a backdrop of very dark purpleish round leaves, three intensely yellow flowers. Each flower has a single row of shiny ovate petals around a cluster of large stamens.

Against a backdrop of bright green round leaves, several intensely yellow flowers, only one in focus. Each flower has a single row of shiny ovate petals around a cluster of large stamens, and in this case, the stamens have extended to reveal the ovary in the middle of the flower.

Lamium purpureum, purple dead-nettle. From close to ground level, a large colony of the plant. Each stem has several deeply veined cordate leaves grading from bright green mature ones lower on the stem to immature reddish ones at the top. In between the immature leaves are flowers and buds. Each flower is typical "singing mouth" mint flower shape, light pink-purple with purple spots.

Magnolia stellata cultivar, star magnolia. Looking down at an unopened flower. The linear white petals are very delicately edged and speckled with deep magenta at the distal end.

Cymbidium 'Upstart'. A couple of stems of flowers and buds. Petals and sepals simlar narrow and long, yellow base with dark orange or brown stripes, labellum white with magenta spots and yellow throat, anther cap pink/brown.

Cymbidium 'King Arthur'. A single stem with several open flowers. Petals and sepals simlar, longer than wide, greensih yellow with stripes and flush of brown rising from the proximal end, lip mainly white with a few pale magenta spots and yellow throat, anther cap yellow with borwn reticulation.

Cymbidium 'Bon Bon'. Petals and sepals similar, wide ovate, chartreuse, lip creamy white with strong red markings, anther cap pale with reddish reticulation.

Laeliocattleya Santa Barbara Sunset 'Showtime'. One stem bearing two open flowers. Petals and sepals similar, subulate, coral-orange with slightly darker ventation, labellum slightly ruffled and bright magenta at the distal end, proximal end curled around in to a tube, yellow inside with strong dark red striping on the inside, petal colour on the outside.

Cattleya Crystelle Smith ‘Nathan’s Reward’. A pair of fairly simple flowers with similar petals, ovate and warm pink, and a fairly simple labellum, rolled somewhat tubelike, gold, frilly at the distal edge.

Pelexia olivacea. On a busy blurry background, a single stem of the orchid bearing many buds and a couple of open flowers, each of which is a green tube with the labellum and column at the top end.

Dendrobium 'Roy Tokugana'. On a leafy background, a stem with 8 or 9 open flowers. Each with five pointy petals, white with indistinct dark red spots on it, labellum in two parts, one like the other petals, but the inner curved around the column, with dark maroon reticulations.

Paphiopedilum 'Saint Swithin' (P. philippinense × P. rothschildianum). A dramatic flower contrasting with the black BG. Labellum yellow with deep red stripes and reticulations, column and staminode yellow with maroon stippling, petals narrow, long, spiralling, yellow with "black" (deep red) dots, dorsal and lateral sepals stiff and prominent, yellow striped with deep red.
