rood<p>I'm not going to judge you for your stance or understanding of Anzac Day. </p><p>For the most part you'll get an automatic pass for choosing Mastodon. </p><p>Importantly, I don't expect progressives to all land on the same page on a traumatic reminder of war. I don't want to belittle those who have given their lives in wars. But using the Remembrance slogan "Lest We Forget" seems pointless now, as it appears we have well and truly forgotten the sacrifice that previous generations made.

#anzacDay, a moment to reflect on the life of one of my many military ancestors.

This year, it seems mildly topical to highlight Wilhelm von Gall, who invaded New York from Canada.

One of three Hessian Brigadiers-General fighting for a British king of German heritage, he saw action from 1776 until the British defeat at Saratoga.

The Hessians were held for years as the "Continental Army". Von Gall was freed in 1780, leaving 2 brothers under foreign soil.

On April 22nd, 1915, German soldiers used Chlorine #gas for the first time in World War I, opening yet another dark chapter in warfare. It happened at in the area around Ypres and was just the beginning.

I had the luck to visit many remembrance sites in Ypres during the last years and the memories still last. Read my thoughts on the first World War in Belgium here:

What happens in Israel does affect Australians.

It also affects what other foreign forces consider appropriate during ‘War’.

Many Australians were protected by ‘Rules of War’ during WWI and WWII, among many other conflicts.
We are currently witnessing the deterioration of those international rules.

That… is bloody scary. What rules will remain when we enter the next world or regional war?

The world has gone full radio rental and Trump continually bleats on about how this and that wouldn't have happened on his watch (thanks sleepy creepy Joe). Who remembers this?
