The 1948-60 Malayan Emergency:

"The British attempted to starve the Malayan Nat'l Liberation Army (MNLA) using scorched earth policies through food rationing, killing livestock, and aerial spraying of the herbicide Agent Orange. The British engaged in extrajudicial killings of unarmed civilians, in violation of the Geneva Conventions. The most infamous example is the Batang Kali massacre, which the press has referred to as "Britain's My Lai". The Briggs Plan forcibly relocated a million civilians into concentration camps. Many Orang Asli indigenous communities were also targeted for internment because the British believed that they were supporting the communists. The widespread decapitation of people suspected to have been guerrillas led to the 1952 British Malayan headhunting scandal."

Wrightbus has unveiled its long-awaited 6x2 zero-emission StreetDeck bus, with the prototype produced in both Northern #Ireland and Malaysia. The launch follows two years of development and aligns with rising global demand, with orders secured in #Europe and the Far East. It’s the latest addition in a record-breaking year that includes new electric and hydrogen vehicles. CEO Jean-Marc Gales called the 6x2 a feat of engineering, with improved battery capacity and no loss in passenger space. The bus will undergo testing this summer before a year-long trial in Hong Kong. Wrightbus, rescued in 2019 by Jo Bamford, now employs over 2,300 staff and produces 1,200 mostly zero-emission buses annually. Backed by a £150m HSBC UK finance deal, the firm is expanding globally, including new sites in the #UK, #Malaysia and #Germany. Gales said Wrightbus is well positioned to lead the global mobility transition and support thousands of supply chain jobs.

Once-lost species are coming back to the densely built-up city-state

September 14, 2023

"In a metropolis of 5.6m people, says Lim Liang Jim, head of biodiversity at the National Parks Board, the priority has been conserving or recreating natural habitats, as well as connecting natural spaces with corridors to let species move and spread. The #renaturalisation of river banks that were previously concreted over helped the otters. A former #railway to #Malaysia is now a “#GreenCorridor” whose damp verges are full of #insects, #frogs and #waterhens. The planted sides and central verges of highways allow smaller animals to move more safely."

South China Morning Post · No to Nick Adams: Malaysian activists warn of protests against US envoy pickThe appointment could test Malaysia’s diplomatic pragmatism as it seeks a trade deal with the US amid Gaza tensions, analysts say.

If all goes well, #TimorLeste will officially join the #ASEAN as its 11th member.

For grassroots:
- 30 days visa-free entry across all 11 ASEAN members
-- you can reset it twice by crossing to another ASEAN member for at least 24 hours, so that's 90 days total
- more work opportunities for Timorians and the rest of ASEANs
- easy exchange student processing
- cultural exchanges
- ASEAN jokes and memes 😂
