Per D.C. National Guard, one of the vehicles in this accident was an M-ATV, an armored tactical vehicle with a V-shaped hull designed to deflect roadside bombs. They have commonly been used in war zones for years, and weigh about 14 tons each.

According to a post on Reddit, a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle t-boned a car in Capitol Hill this morning. Firefighters reportedly used the jaws of life to free the driver, who DC Fire & EMS said sustained only minor injuries.

On Tuesday, vendors noticed fewer customers, especially Spanish speakers. The White House reported 450 arrests since the federal operation began on August 7. The Republican president has declared a crisis in the Democratic-controlled city, despite declining crime statistics, and has taken control of the police department for 30 days. National Guard members from West Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana have begun arriving in Washington to perform similar duties to D.C. Guard members already on the streets, including protecting landmarks and crowd control.

#Louisiana mobilized 135 personnel over the weekend & expect them to arrive in #Washington on Tuesday, said Lt. Col. Noel Collins, a spox for the Louisiana #NationalGuard.

Information about where the #troops would patrol & where they would be housed has been scant. A #Trump admin official said Monday that the Guard members “will protect federal assets, create a safe environment for #law enforcement officials to carry out their duties when required, & provide a visible presence to deter crime.”

Members of the D.C. National Guard are being trained in the use of M-17 pistols so they can be ready if an order to be armed comes down from President Trump or the U.S. Department of Defense, The Handbasket reports. "Having them armed indicates either a concern for their physical safety or a desire to make them more intimidating (or both.)” Lindsay P. Cohn, a visiting professor at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs told journalist Marisa Kabas. Here's more.

The number of state #NationalGuard #troops detailed to Trump’s effort from the 6 states — #Louisiana, #Mississippi, #Tennessee, #WestVirginia, #SouthCarolina & #Ohio — amount to >1,100. Governors said they were responding to requests from the #Trump admin.

It is not clear why the admin requested additional support. About 800 troops have already been called up from the #WashingtonDC, Guard & have had a limited assigned role so far in Trump’s 10-day-old attempted takeover of #DC #law enforcement.
