I've read some mystery-thriller #books over the years that I believe are great. However, even great ones, like the following, never seem to get reflective about the thorny political or psychological issues underlying their intrigues:
• THE LASKO TANGENT by Patterson (1979).
• THE THIRTEENTH TALE by Setterfield (2006).
• THE LAST VISITOR by Griffin (2024).
Hence, although I do recommend the above as highly proficient genre #novels, I think this genre ultimately can't be taken very seriously. Based on my exposure to modern-day exemplars, at least. Such novels aren't extremely deep or moving, as far as I can tell, despite having clear paths to be so (which is an extra mystery, I suppose).
By the way, THE LAST VISITOR was a recent beach read for me. I mean it, really; not kidding.
