John Harris<p>Amazing fact: there are at least three people on Metafilter, all participating in the BASIC anniversary thread, who learned programming using an obscure assembler cartridge produced for the <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/Odyssey2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Odyssey2</span></a> console.</p>
Retrogamer NZ<p>In the 1970s, developers hadn't quite figured out how to translate golf into a video game yet. Philips' version on the <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Videopac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Videopac</span></a> 7000 is one of the earliest renditions, putting aside the amazing Flats/Golf on the PLATO system and some text-only games. It's a plausible attempt, with simple but (mostly) effective controls. Hold fire to power up your clockwise backswing, then release.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Atari" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Atari</span></a> must have approved, as they pretty much copied it for their Golf (1980).</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/retrogaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrogaming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Odyssey2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Odyssey2</span></a></p>
Retrogamer NZ<p>Just as I thought it was safe to leave the 1970s...</p><p>... Videopac Collection 1 is out on Steam: <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/2193100/Videopac_Collection_1/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">store.steampowered.com/app/219</span><span class="invisible">3100/Videopac_Collection_1/</span></a>. 10 games from the Philips <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Videopac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Videopac</span></a> 7000 AKA the <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Magnavox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Magnavox</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Odyssey2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Odyssey2</span></a> (!)</p><p>Presumably there are only 10 games because they want you to buy Videopac Collection 2 when it comes out. (Which I probably will. *sigh*.)</p><p>Anyway, here's Air-Sea War, which looks suspiciously like the bomber games on <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Atari2600" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Atari2600</span></a> Air-Sea Battle.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/retrogames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrogames</span></a></p>
