World Rainforest Day is on the 22nd June.

"The UK is home to some of the rarest and most magical rainforests on Earth. Home to mosses, lichens, fungi, trees, plants, birds, insects and mammals, temperate rainforests are biodiversity powerhouses. But they're under threat. 

Once forests like these covered up to 20% of the UK, now that's been reduced to less than 1% of the land area."

Biodiversity of cattle in Amazon rainforest

Approximately 289,000 square miles of the Amazon Basin has been deforested since the late 1970s. Approximately 60% is from ranching. The resulting pastures tend to be of poor quality, yet cleared land is easier for claiming ownership. These livestock are mixed breeds.

White and brown cattle grazing on the bank of a muddy river. The white animal with drooping ears is an Indo-Brazilian. The others are nagori cattle. Both species are very tolerant of extreme heat.

This obituary focuses on his work in the Amazon, currently exhibited here in Brussels.

But his work on on wars and famines, and on the plight of workers and refugees, is equally important.
