Isodontia mexicana, a grass-carrying wasp that provisions nests with paralyzed tree crickets. This individual emerged from a cocoon that was in the observation panel of my insect hotel. I'm hoping this year that some will move into the pitcher plant (Sarracenia sp.) that I have growing in my new mini pond. This is our prize Sarracenia oreophila, "pitcher plant", and I have never seen them with a flower this color! Normally it is green, with some color inside... but this one is deep magenta, all the way through. It's spectacular.

Maybe not obvious is this special feature of all carnivorous plants: an extremely taught stalk that grows far above the plant for the pollinators to reach the flower and not be enticed by the pitchers of death (or a drosera's sticky resinated leaves) below.

I got kind of creative in the fall last year and planted some pitcher plants outside. I also planted a few in a shallow clay pot (which isn’t recommended) as another test. It looks like they’re all doing better than last year’s test in a water dish (which rotted out). We had some cold this winter but it didn't last as long. That may have helped. It will be interesting to see what they do over the next couple of months.

Vibrant winter color of a purple pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea). This one is growing in a small tub that I drilled just a couple of small holes into three inches from the bottom. This is so it retains plenty of moisture during the hotter months but still drains enough that the plants don't rot.

Finally got around to combining multiple small pots into two big pots. One planter is mostly sarracenia (pitcher plants) and the other is mostly drosera (sundews).

Ended up with a bunch of left over soil, so I put those into three small pots in case there’s anything else growing below the visible plants. Won’t catch me napping again, secret plants!

I’ve just been checking hashtags and realised: there is not nearly enough insectivorous plant content on mastodon, I’m going to do my best to help remedy this, but I would appreciate help.

This sarracenia grown from open pollinated seed is my favorite so far. It only stands five inches but should be beautiful next season.

A chunk of moss living in a bog pot. Several still small sundews (drosera) grow on the edges, as well as some tiny pitcher plant seedlings (sarracenia). The moss has some bits of dried stuff above it as well as the requisite cat hair.
