August was cooler than the 1991-2020 baseline average over a large portion of central and western Alaska, while most of the North Slope, eastern mainland and Southeast were warmer than normal. Kotzebue had the coolest August since 1984 while at Ketchikan the mildest since 1994.

Highest reported temperatures in and around Alaska during summer 2024. In addition to all-time record high temperatures for parts of the central North Slope coast and the lower Macknezie River Valley, 90F (32.2C) at McGrath on July 24th was also a record high.Northway 89F (31.7C) on August 18th was a record for August and also the highest temp so late in year. There's a slight chance the Aleutians could see higher temperatures in the next few weeks. #akwx #Climate #Summer2024

Landslide in town Ketchikan Sunday afternoon. From NWS Juneau:
"At approximately 400 PM, KPU Electric reported a landslide in Ketchikan. The landslide went through 3rd Avenue to the 1st Avenue Bypass. Six homes have been impacted by the landslide. A power pole is down in the area of Second Avenue. Lines are on the ground and impacting internet and phone in other areas of town. Power outages are also being reported in some parts of town."
In case you're wondering, 2024 northern North America wildfire area burned through August 23rd. Northwest Territories, Canada fires accounts nearly 80 percent of the area burned, which is not quite as lopsided as 2023, when NWT fires accounted for more than 90 percent of northern North America wildfire area burned. The season is effectively over in Alaska and most of the Yukon but still going in the NWT.
