That wasn’t always so. What changed? Increase in traffic (county’s pop. up 33% since we moved to this address); increase in EVs (great for reduced noise pollution, not for detecting car behind you); post-covid changes impacted physical flexibility.

Types incl handlebar-, helmet-, glasses-mounted & bar-end. John Arnold
_The Evening Post_, 16 August 1924:
MOTORISTS AND
PEDESTRIANS
TO THE EDITOR
Sir,—Permit me as an old-standing motorist to draw all pedestrians’ attention to a most urgent and important matter:—Will #pedestrians kindly note that on wet days, especially nights, it is most difficult for motorists to see plainly very far ahead; more especially is it difficult to get a clear side view when the side-screens are up. I use an automatic screen-wiper; but even this has a tendency to obscure the clear view at times; and as wipers are not used on side-screens, nor is it possible to hold a hand out and keep on wiping the side curtains there is danger of pedestrians being run over. It would be ridiculous to leave the side door open, and if it were possible to do so, motorists could not then get a clear side view. The trouble is, Sir, pedestrians rush across the road, and no blame can be attached to the motorist on wet days. Even with full headlights on, the lights do not show up clearly on wet roads.
A little thought by pedestrians would save an immense amount of anxiety to motorists.…
…
l am, etc.,
WALKING TO DEATH.
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19240816.2.142
#OnThisDay #OTD #PapersPast #TrafficSafety #NewZealand

Chilly Dee Williams
In the 1970s the city of Akron started building a freeway that pulled apart a Black neighborhood. Ukraine News
The National Police will introduce additional restrictions for repeat traffic rules violators. According to the first deputy chief of the Patrol Police Department, there's a need for more specific responsibility for such violators. The Patrol Police has already initiated discussions on changes to traffic rules involving public and parliamentary committees to limit the number of violations to three per year. #TrafficSafety #LawEnforcement
