I'm seeing so many posts in #German in my timeline, and I cannot speak German
My instance is #French , I'd love to make German friends, but #language is a barrier
Is it because we don't specify the language we use in each post? Are there any option to detect languages and #translate #toots ?

#Update Due to the cost of maintaining a toll-free number, they ask you to call (213) 787-6211 instead. If you call the 888 number the recording says that.
Because it can be difficult to #translate #AltText, here's what it says:
IMPORTANT
USC law students have started a hotline for people to call when they have an immigration-related court hearing but don't want to show up in person for fear of being arrested/ detained by ICE outside the courthouse. The students will help people complete and submit a
"Motion to Change Hearing Format," which can allow someone to have a remote/online hearing instead of in-person.
hotline # is (888) 462-5211
They can help in English or español.
The famous quotes from The Biography of Guo Tuo-tuo, the Tree Planter (種樹郭橐駝傳):
Quotes on Tree-Planting Experience
"橐駝非能使木壽且孳也,能順木之天,以致其性焉爾。"- Translation: Tuo-tuo isn't able to make trees live long and flourish; he simply follows their natural tendencies, allowing their inherent nature to fully develop.
"其本欲舒,其培欲平,其土欲故,其築欲密。"- Translation: Its roots should be spread out, the soil around its base should be level, the earth should be its original soil, and the tamping should be firm.
"其蒔也若子,其置也若棄。"- Translation: When planting, treat it like a child; once planted, leave it as if abandoned.
"雖曰愛之,其實害之;雖曰憂之,其實讎之。"- Translation: Although they say they love it, they are actually harming it; although they say they worry about it, they are actually its enemy.
"見長人者好煩其令,若甚憐焉,而卒以禍。"- Translation: Seeing those in power who love to issue numerous commands, as if showing great compassion, but ultimately bringing disaster.
"傳其事以爲官戒也。"- Translation: I record this matter as a warning for officials.
Bing Translate has gone from "I would definitely recommend to a friend" to "Dammit, I hate to have to use Google Translate…".

I can't seem to get #translate to work on @Tusky on Android, the option doesn't appear under the 3 dot menu. Is it currently working or is there a trick or option somewhere I'm overlooking?

I've just installed it, so I can't do a proper review yet, but I had a tab open with a YT video that was auto-translated and upon refreshing that tab, everything on that tab (title, audio etc.) was back to its original language.
Amazing!

I am planning a trip to Japan for Expo2025 and was looking for a privacy respecting alternative to Google Translate. VoiceTra is an app from the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology in Japan. The user interface may seem hopelessly outdated, but the app is still maintained and updated. It understands 31 languages and it is excellent when it comes to translating from Japanese and into Japanese.

"Almost unnoticed, April brought another small milestone of the ♪Energy transition. For the first time worldwide, more electricity was generated by #Photovoltaics than #nuclear
In just five years, according to the analysis service Ember, solar power generation has tripled!"

Thanks to the EU's Digital Markets Act, Google Translate can now be the default translation app on iOS.
However, for privacy reasons, I’ll never use a Google app, not even the translator. I bet they’re profiling users on that too.
Things you find out when you press translate.
Viking horn helmets were not worn by Vikings, but by background actors in an opera about Vikings.
Viking horn helmets are entirely made up, by theatre nerds.
Ha, yay Theatre nerds.
___
"Because Richard Wagner wanted to make the Nordic heroes appear more wary in the “Ring of Nibelungen”, he set horn helmets for them. Since then, this symbol has been adhering to the Vikings. Archaeologists never found such a helmet."
I was looking into how to active the #translate function on #Mastodon and discovered that if you pay for #DeepL Pro as a consumer you can't use the DeepL API Free or Pro unless you create a new account.
So I emailed #CustomerSupport to tell them about this oversight. Why can't a paying Pro customer generate a free API key without signing up again?
Of course they don't answer the *actual* question and just tell me I should register a new account to use DeepL API Free.

Offering translation in #Mastodon
should be EASY, if not automatic. Offering translation should be opt out, not "what are the obscure steps I need to compete so that translation is offered"
Please #mastodon #coders fix the #translate obstacle.
