Criminals, as a rule, tend to deny their crimes. It's not really all that difficult to understand, Mr Albanese.

And authoritarians use open denial of obvious realities as a test of loyalty, to see who will play along, seeking to curry favour with the strongman by toeing the party line, who keeps their head down out of fear or a misguided belief in 'not taking sides', and who is foolish/courageous enough to declare that the naked emperor is clothed in evil deeds.
