A US general just threatened Russia's Kaliningrad — this is why that's so significant.

The Russian exclave of Kaliningrad is once again in the news, after a senior US military commander on 17 July issued a stark warning to the Kremlin that NATO forces could take control of it "in a timeframe that is unheard of."

The remarks are a direct threat to the Kremlin about the consequences of further Russian aggression beyond Ukraine.

The EU agrees an 18th sanctions package on Russia.

The 27 European Union member states have agreed on an 18th round of sanctions targeting Russia for invading Ukraine.

The measures are intended to further reduce Moscow's income from the export of oil to non-EU countries.

Slovakia had been holding up the decision, citing concerns over its gas imports, but Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico relented.
