After her highest grossing film, Grand Hotel (1932), Greta Garbo only made eight more movies. She concluded her career with Two-Faced Woman (1941) a convoluted tale about fictitious twin sisters. The film was a flop.
Two-Faced Woman was an attempt to modernise and Americanise Garbo’s image. At the time, her fan base was shrinking in America, so she decided to pull the plug.
Greta Garbo was never happy in the off-screen spotlight and I imagine it came as a great relief to her when she was granted her wish to be “let alone”.
