Meet My Female Ancestors

Mary David
Relationship to me: 5 x great grandmother
Baptised: 21 November 1765 in Llangathen, Carmarthen, Wales
Married: 18 July 1788 in Carmarthen to John Jones, agricultural labourer
Died: 19 January 1864 in Mountain Ash, Glamorgan, Wales
Gave birth to: at least nine children (the records are incomplete) including my 4 x great grandmother Margaret Jones in 1811 (Mary’s last born).

Mary was born in a small village and with her husband and children moved to work on the land in another small village. Her death record states that her age was 99, but she was “only” 98. Mary died in Mountain Ash, 38 miles from her home. At the age of 98, what was she doing there? The railway was being constructed at that time, and maybe Mary travelled on it to visit friends. All we know for certain is that she made the return journey to the church of St James in the Parish of Pyle and Kenfig.

On the burial record, Mary was listed at number 98. Number 101 was Daniel Hopkin, my 4 x great grandfather. Mary and Daniel were not related at the time, but living in a small village they certainly knew each other.

@HannahHowe you should be very careful about posting that kind of personal information online.

”Great, great, great, great, great grandmother’s maiden name” is a common security question for things like online banking 😂
