Hannah Howe

1920s Flapper Slang

Fire alarm - a divorced woman
Fire bell - a married woman
Fire extinguisher - a chaperone
Forty-niner - a man looking for a rich wife
Handcuff - an engagement ring
Hush money - a young woman’s allowance
Munitions - a woman’s make-up

@HannahHowe The first three more used by men, perhaps. "Look at the tomato in the corner!" "Nah, she's a fire bell, forget her." And meanwhile in the corner, "Hey, he's got no handcuff!" "Not a chance, ya meatball, total forty-niner. Don't waste your munitions."

@HannahHowe is this where the name of the American Football team comes from? That would be funny 😅

As far as I know, 'Forty-Niners' is what people called the miners who travelled to California during the Goldrush of 1849.
